Is EOS a scam - a quick look at github and a few thoughts

in #cryptocurrency8 years ago (edited)

I stumbled across ~~~ embed:CryptoCurrency/comments/6k5jwo/eos_is_rebranded_bitshares/ so I thought I'd take a look. That post directs reddit metadata:fENyeXB0b0N1cnJlbmN5fGh0dHBzOi8vd3d3LnJlZGRpdC5jb20vci9DcnlwdG9DdXJyZW5jeS9jb21tZW50cy82azVqd28vZW9zX2lzX3JlYnJhbmRlZF9iaXRzaGFyZXMvIHNvIEkgdGhvdWdodCBJJ2QgdGFrZSBhIGxvb2suICBUaGF0IHBvc3QgZGlyZWN0cyB8 ~~~here where numerous people are insisting that EOS is rebranded Bitshares. After reading some of those comments I decided to check out their github repo.

I decided to do a git search for Bitshare:

Going all the way back to the initial commit (https://github.com/EOSIO/eos/commit/e03269e8ed2a2544f85573f0a8028724b8a57e4c) you'll see they do have a lot of references to bitsharesin there.

Scam is definitely a strong term to use here as I don't believe the intent is to screw over investors. I completely understand if the intent is to make something completely different and they're using the Bitshares repo as a starting point - which at this point is most likely. I don't believe Dan Larimer's intent would be to cut and run with something after being in the space this long.

These conversations are exactly why I posted this though, to get some feedback and discussion going, because it definitely seems like people are under the wrong impression...and at first glance it seemed odd to me. However, as a developer I completely understand using the boilerplate of Bitshares to get started.

Conclusion

While it may seem odd to outsiders, software engineers often copy/clone code as often as possible because there's no reason to "recreate the wheel". There's nothing I've personally found in the EOS repo that suggest it's a scam. The use cases for each system are different, so it makes sense to split them up.

Thanks to everyone commenting and sparking some discussion :)

Anyone have any thoughts or arguments for/against EOS?

Sort:

EOS base on graphene code. Graphere in bitshares 2.0.
Steem anf Peerplays also base on graphene code

It's the same devs. It is the same dpos system. Of course much is going to be the same. Because it works real well.

At this point I have to ask: who cares? People are too busy throwing ETH at anything called ICO. Personally, I am interested in this as well but an upgraded version of BitShares would not necessarily be a bad thing. EOS could be using parts of existing software. What's important is that EOS - when released - does what is promised. Devs still have time (and funds now) to craft nice software.

I don't disagree with you there, the ICOs seem to be a bit out of hand in my opinion. There was a great reddit post the other day that brought up a good point, that this amount of funding is likely overkill for a lot of the projects. I've linked it below for anyone that missed it.

I care only because I don't believe complete clones are good for crypto as a whole. I'd prefer to see Bitshares improve on it's own, rather than have EOS come along and clone/change minor things to compete.

If EOS will indeed just be an upgraded version of BitShares, it would have been better to upgrade BitShares itself.

On the other hand, would devs have been able to collect capital to fund the upgrade?

EOS is supposed to be open source so upgrades could be implemented in BitShares when EOS source is made available.

I read an article about EOS the other day. In the comments below there were several posts attacking Dan. I dont understand its roots, but the point is Graphene has been a success by anyones standards - bitshares is up, working, handling volumes for years now. Steem is a success too. I think there is just ignorance and hostility because he has built an alternative thatfs working. Simple as that.

Haters gonna hate. The fact of the matter is graphene is the only blockchain tech capable of scaling to MasterCard tx/sec levels today. That speaks for itself, IMO.
