Cryptocurrency coins have followed a growth trajectory resulting in increase in market capitalization from $66 billion in July'2017 to $164 billion currently. There are around 867 active currencies operating in 5515 markets and are marketed under different niche. Here, we look at two important metrics for analysing the growth trend of cryptocurrency i.e. market capitalization and total supply. Market capitalization = (total supply X Price) and gives an indication of the value of currencies. The total market capitalization of top ten currencies is 86% and shows that these currencies hold major value. But, there is a reverse trend for total coin supply, which is governed by marketing strategy and niche for the coins. The supply is regulated and is manipulated for various reasons, for instance "Ripple" has total supply of 100,000 Millions with 1% market cap, in which most of coins are held by the owners and is used by the banks. Next on the list is NEM, which has 9000 coins and 2% market cap, and is for long term investors. Since, it has not been marketed extensively and XEM is similar to satoshi in BTC, so the supply is quite high. IOTA has 1% market cap and is targeting Internet of Things (IoT) niche, in which coins are premined. Another currency that is for cloud storage is Siacoin and is not in top ten and is competing with Amazon, Google and Microsoft.
Most of newly introduced coins are well marketed and are targeting investors from different niche. It would be nice to see how different currencies interact based on causation effect (not simple correlation) by impact from common drivers.
