The monero (xmr) development team should be applauded for taking steps to prohibit asic mining. Just another example of staying true to its original vision. The reason monero chose cryptonight algorithm was that the algo was asic resistant and is a sluuggish algo. This move will prevent cartel mining from controlling the network.
It is sad that other cryptocurrencies are not following the same agenda. Look at ethereum now, with the price down ordinary miners are pushed away by whales.

to be honest most CryptoNight coins are taking steps against ASICS. it is a little bit too late as CN ASICS are with us for some time already - Bitmain just kept quiet about them
