Whats up cryptobrains! :)

I would like to elaborate on the current situation = shortage of GPUs worldwide and also talk few things about AMD vs Nvidia cards for mining and its future.

Currently, the most profitable cards are RX 470/570/480/580, but this might change very soon. I'm not sure if you have noticed the crazy increase in the ETH hashing power/difficulty:

You should be also aware about the roughly every 45 days increase of the DAG file for ETH mining. The increased size of the DAG file will have a direct impact on your total hashrate of your mining cards.
Here are few things I would like to point out.

  • The amount of RAM size will eventually limit the possibility of ETH mining. However, 4GB cards like any of the listed above are pretty safe to keep it up with the increasing DAG file for a while
  • The big downside of the AMD cards is, that by increasing the DAG file, you are loosing some hashing power (it went from ~27MH/s on RX 470 to 20MH/s and lower with DAG 160/180, etc.)

I've tested ETH DAG file increase on my Nvidia cards (1060 and 1070) and they are unaffected by the increase of the DAG file. Just my 3GB 1060s weren't able to keep up with a DAG file bigger than 160. The Dag 180 should happen in about 6 months. So plan well the cards you want to buy for your mining.

The conclusion I do have from all of this is to go with GTX 1070. The hashing power was unaffected even for a DAG 190 and if ETH profitability would go low, you will always have more choices of mining with Nvidia over AMD (at least currently). The maximum price I would pay for 1070 is €420. You can find few cards for this price, or lower on mindfactory.com, or you can check amazon.de/fr/es/co.uk.

Another option is wait for Vega/ Volta, but who knows what they will bring on the table and how long it would take to actually get them.

You can check "Imineblocks" video, where he is showing a real life results testing with the increased DAG file size.

Sort:

im since 3 weeks zcash mining with 1070s, i dont really get the AMD hype ... NVIDIA is in all points better (except ETH mining and ROI in days but not much less) i just smiled a bit while i readed the DAG file increase news on AMD .... and now they are sold out and at the end much less worth than nvidia probably ( in % ) we will see :) good luck in mining, miners :D

yup, but considering the normal prices, you were paying with AMD €200 for 27MH/s and €400 for 29MH/s with Nvidia.
