Altcoins are basically all cryptocurrencies that are not bitcoin.

And here's a thing - most of the attention, especially one that's coming from outsiders who aren't really into cryptocurrencies, is fixated on bitcoin. And bitcoin really influences the rest of the cryptos - as it's price raise - so does the prices of most other currencies. But as it's price falls - same happens to most other cryptos.

So you should keep your attention on bitcoin at all times, but the fact of the matter is, even if bitcoin reaches 40 000 dollars in 2018 as many experts are predicting, it's price would rise by about 265 % from the current price. Whereas, for example, IOTA's price has risen more than 5 times or 500% in a bit more than a week from the end of November to now.

So remember, all that matters are the percentages. Even if bitcoin raises from 15 000 to 30 000 the rise will be 200% and you will double your investment. But had you invested in a smaller cryptocurrency and it would have risen from say less than 1 dollar to 5 dollars, your investment would have increased five-fold. And in many cases, in a shorten time span.

But at the same time you have to remember that while there are many chances for many small cryptocurrencies to rise, by hundreds and even thousands of percent, they are also less stable than bitcoin or even other major established cryptos and so there's always a chance that they won't make it.

So with the seemingly greater rewards, often come greater risks.

My advice is that you need to make sure that you learn as much as possible about many different cryptocurrencies and make smart investments in the cryptos that you think has a highest chance of making you the most amount of money possible and to do that you have to look at both bitcoin and other altcoins.
