Crypto Sentiment Analysis: Top 9 Alt coins heading into week of April 22

General reminder: This is one of three types of sentiment analysis I do. The daily analysis will likely only benefit short term traders. The weekly analysis I do is best suited for swing traders. And the monthly analysis is my more long-term offering.

Weeks like this are tough to find a "winner" in.

Alts crushed it across the board this week, generating more positive sentiment (and total mentions in general) than I've ever had since I started doing this. I collected sentiment on 146 different coins and more than 850 separate mentions.

The complete data is at the bottom if you're looking for a specific coin outside the top 9.

Here's how this works. We're all prone to biases, so I do a blind analysis. Every week, I scrape the social media postings of 40 prominent influencers and traders, chart every time they mention a specific coin or token and whether they list it in a positive, negative or neutral light. I tally those up (1 point for a positive mention, -1 for negative) on a monthly, weekly and sometimes daily basis and post it here.

Generally speaking, I keep it to predictions. I'm less interested in people remarking that a chart is going up or down.

Why these folks? Because people trust them. I know larger sentiment analyses exist, but I think there's less value in scraping the sentiment of 10s of thousands of amateur traders, most of whom are new to the game.

The idea? The blind analysis of dozens of crypto influencers should overcome any individual biases. It's a means of pulling a signal from a shit-ton of noise. It's early, but so far the returns have been promising.

With that, here are the top 9 coins for this week. The charts below show each coins score and how they got there during the course of the week:

The Influencers

Who am I?

I'm an investigative data journalist during the day, and I've been looking for a way to cut through the noise and get a true sense of what some of the biggest crypto influencers are pushing toward and pulling away from.

Using a pseudonym here because I can't post about this shit on my verified accounts. I've become mildly obsessed with crypto and its constant stream of data and needed an outlet. So here I am.

What is this?

Each week, I scrape the Twitter accounts of some of the crypto world's favorite influencers, traders and TA folk. I run a basic sentiment analysis to see which coins they are mentioning positively, in a neutral way and which they are mentioning in a negative light.

I calculate "power" simply by subtracting negative mentions from positive ones to give an aggregate score. The higher the score, the better, the lower the worse. For the daily rankings, I also create aggregate scores for the majors and the Alt markets. The Alts get a 10 point deduction any time the majors go below zero, since overall the Alt-market has a tough time staying above water when BTC is in a spiral.

This isn't financial advice, just my own way of trying to make sense of what's out there. And as with most things, the more data I collect, hopefully, the more interesting it'll be. This is a work in progress. Please leave suggestions on how to make it better. I imagine if I keep up with it, I'll be able to expand a bunch of the analysis, but I wanted to start somewhere.

Sort:

You're really good at it. You deserve far more followers.

I guess EOS is a sleeper. By that I mean it's power, utility, and potential are not being seen or talked about by your influencers.

Surprisingly little this week. But remember, that's just this week.

Can you prove correlation between your sentiment analysis and price action (cleared of the general trend on low-caps which are all going up now)? So far I didn't saw it materializing in any of these analysis. Upvoted anyway.

As I say, this is a work in progress. Now that I have some base data now, I'm going to start posting results on a regular basis. Look for the performance of my last week's top 12 tonight. The plan for the moment is to show how they performed and pit it against one of the alt coin indices.

I plan to be transparent though, because this is as much for me as it is for anyone else. Regardless, it does stand as a distillation of many of the top crypto influencers, whether they're right or wrong. I don't think anyone expects them to be perfect.

Regardless, I'll calculate last week's performance and post a link here. Suggestions/criticism welcome.
