What this kind of project often misses is "a vision" - some kind of marketing narative that explain why anyone should care and why a sizable amount of people will keep caring about it a long time from now.
If anyone is to get involved with a project like this, they need to be able to imagine something enticing, to dream of something. This is where the "mystique" comes into the picture. FluffyPony managed with his charisma to create such a narative around Monero. He was also quite effective at pushing (some) people away from Bytecoin.
