Pretty big news for Steem in some senses - The Chinese government's first publication of a Monthly cryptocurrency 'assessment index' has placed Steem as number 2 in the world!
A major Chinese government department – the China Electronic Information Industry Development (CCID) of the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology – has announced today its inaugural monthly Global Public Chain Assessment Index at a conference in Beijing. This independent analysis of cryptocurrencies and global public blockchain technology demonstrates the confidence of the Chinese Government in the technology, and will act as a guide for government, enterprise and research institutes.

As you can see, the assessment takes into consideration a spectrum of factors, including the quality of the technology, the extent of the application / usefulness of the technology and it's level of innovation. Only Ethereum beat Steem, which is interesting in itself, since EOS is likely to beat Ethereum, which would mean that in the future, we may see all 3 of @dan's systems in the top 20 list (Bitshares, his previous project is also listed at position #12).
It appears that Steem is starting to be fully appreciated by the wider world and in particular numerous governments - as evidenced by the reaction experienced by the @promo-steem team in their recent trip to the iCoin Summit in Cyprus where they opened dialog with national governments and were invited to moderate another event which will features key speakers, including from the IMF.
It's fair to say that Steem is likely to see significant expansion and likely price increases in the near future... Stay tuned!

Although the Chinese government recognizes steem as a good cryptocurrency, I do not think steemit has much influence in China since they are very opposed to western products and platforms. At least in Korea steemit it is very popular.
As I understand it, Steem is one of the currencies that has been approved for trading in China.. I'm not sure if they appreciate or value it's anarchistic tendencies ;0)
This is indeed a good news for us steemian.
It is a matter of time before steemit overtake ethereum to the number one spot, it won't take long before that take place when you consider the fact that steemit is still operating at relatively one percent capacity according to blocktivity.
I think ethereum is operating at 8 percent capacity according to the same source
Let's keep getting more people into the system, more activities will take us to the first position faster than expected.
