A slight change to the CryptoNight algorithm is all it takes...
Bitmain is in the business of developing high-performance, specialised, and expensive mining equipment. Their new Bitmain AntMiner X3 - meant to mine using the CryptoNight algorithm, has already been rendered obsolete by the developers at Monero.
To be fair, Monero is not the only cryptocurrency using the CryptoNight algorithm, but it is by far the most profitable and popular such currency. By slightly adjusting the parameters of this algorithm, this dedicated ASIC, created for the purpose of mining Monero, will no longer do so with a decent level of efficiency.
By adjusting this, Monero avoids centralisation of their currency, preventing it from being mined in specialised multi-million dollar mining farms. Originally priced around $12 000 USD per rig, the AntMiner X3 can be yours for the low, low price of $3 000. Don't buy it.
