I'm very sorry to read about your dad's health. That must have been pretty stressful while still traveling back home hearing about his surgery. You are right, everything happens for a reason, even though at first we may not see it or understand it, eventually, it was probably meant to be this way. So I Hope you can spend some time with your family, and maybe mostly with your dad when he recovers to make nice memories and take it from there.
