Dipawali is celebrated in the memory of Lord Ram Chandra's return to Ayodhya from exile of 14 years. The city was decorated in various ways including lamps and lights. Therefore, Dipawali is celebrated on this day.
Another reason is that Goddess Laxmi was freed from the prison of Raja Bali by Lord Vishnu. Thus, worship of Goddess Laxmi is performed with great zeal and enthusiasm. The traders change their account-books on Dipawali. Thus traders start their business with new technics and high hopes.
