Showing up is key. It doesn't decide good or bad though. A good dad can be a real game changer for a kid. Even a bad dad showed up though and was a dad. A kid, or a mom, might hate this guy but he showed up.
It's powerful for a kid to have a dad. Even more powerful when we realize it. Sometimes it takes until adulthood to see them. Especially if they are angry, abusive or have habits.
I didn't accept my dad until I was about 30. He was such an asshole I couldn't see the real him, nor that he really did show up. I'll always remember the day I finally saw him.
The hard parts of him made him seem cold and heartless. His abuse never helped his case.
He was a real muthafucka though. Sacrificed a lot for me to have things. It doesn't make the abuse the right decision. That's a dad having trouble with the stress of it all. The real him, in most cases, wanted to be different.
When I finally accepted and forgave my dad, the world changed for me.
Being a dad for my son has been the coolest thing I've ever been part of.
The absolute coolest thing!
We really should make a much bigger deal out of fathers day.
I wrote this for both dads and kids.
For kids to see their dads, realize them and respect them for the sacrifice they put in even when it was tough to bare.
For dads to have encouragement, knowing they were indeed a dad and that someone does see them.
