A Dash of Sult N Papper 07/20/20> Talk about being confused… I was.

Just when you...

Just when you think you are done with something and can move on to something new a surprise happens. I thought I was done with the contest business for a while but low and behold someone liked the way I ran my contest so well that she decided to send me $25 HIVE to apply to my next contest prize money.

I am fresh out of contest ideas right now so I’m going to have to give this some thought. My methodology on contests is to make them simple and with very few rules. I actually think I hit a home run with this last contest if I do say so myself.

There were a...

There were a good amount of entries that were from every part of the world, in fact the top four prize winners were all from foreign countries. I had to go look up where they from just to confirm that because of the four winners I had only run across one of them before on the block chain and that was from the poker tables.

Turns out the first place winner is a real life medical doctor I believe he is from Bangladesh . Funny story I’ve got to share right here; when I went to determine his location I looked at his most recent blog post and I was confused for just a minute. The subtitle of his blog was a familiar quote maybe you’ll recognize it;

"Three great forces rule the world: stupidity, fear and greed."

-Albert Einstein

I recognized it...

I recognized it right away but that is what confused me; it was the second place winning quote from the quote contest. For just a minute though I had to do a “double take“to make sure I wasn’t looking up the wrong person. The winning quote in the contest was the J K Rowling quote he had submitted.
Then it hit me; @simplifylife and I had discussed that second place quote and we both had sort of the same take on the COVID situation with respect to the “greed” forces.
Which brings up a good point, the quotes are in the public domain and the authors of the quotes are there so if you see one you like feel free to use. I plan on using some for sure but they are fair game for anyone so you might want to bookmark the Dash from 07/11/20 in case you want a quick access to a variety of quotes.

The second place winner was from somewhere in Pennsylvania and the third place winner was from Portland, OR. Some of you might say those are “not foreign countries” but anywhere but Texas is a foreign country as far as I’m concerned. The Peoples’ Choice winner is from Indonesia I believe, I might be wrong on that, but I know it was across at least one big pond if not more from here. France and Korea were also in the added categories as winners of $5 HIVE.

The point is...

The point is; I need to come up with a contest that isn’t hindered by location or culture. I didn’t set out to do that with this last contest but it just worked out that way and it got interest from several locations around the world. The last contest was for "me" but I would like the next contest to be for “you”.

Photography seems the most easy to pull off because nearly everyone has access to some type of digital camera but there are plenty of photo contests on HIVE so I am going to shy away from that at the moment. The only way I might go the photo route is if I can think of a particular subject matter that the photos would have to be of then that might be a doable deal.

I would like to do this in the next month or so. I’ll be open to suggestions in a couple of weeks if I don’t come up with something on my own. That month of time will let me build up my prize fund as well. I went a little “over budget” on the last contest. I planned on $60 HIVE in prizes and ended up paying right near $85, plus the potential for that to increase still has a couple of days left too.

Moving on...

Moving on… Yesterday was my oldest brother’s 75th birthday and since he lives about 1200 miles away I didn’t drop by to visit him but I did the next best thing. I sent him some of the best slow smoked Texas BBQ money can buy. I knew he was having a small get together at his house with his kids and grand kids so I made sure they would be “eatin’ good”.

You folks know that I know good bbq from my “Will Eat BBQ 4 U” bbq reviews back on FIRED. So he and his family were treated to brisket, sausage , and ribs from the New Braunfels Smoke House in New Braunfels, TX.

Those folks not only know how to make good bbq but they know how to package and ship it correctly so that everything arrives in perfect shape. They also give you complete instructions on how to reheat it so that it is the right temperature for eating without drying the meat out.

That about does it for now; I am only about 10 hours behind right now and the day is only eight hours old. There was a day when I could finish and post these before my eyes would close for the day but last night wasn’t one of those.

Until next time,
Sult

Lucky brother and family! What an awesome birthday gift. We haven't had a decent brisket in years and if I recall correctly it was a Texas BBQ brisket. Has my mouth watering at the memory...

From your comment and Eric's it seems I have stirred up the fire on BBQ memories. Don't know if they ship internationally and if they did not sure you would get it anyway, "government inspection" would probably deem it not safe and the inspectors would be having it for lunch.

Yes, I am from Bangladesh! You figured that out correctly 😉

I really liked your idea of using quotes as an assist to proving a point! They can be extremely handy to polish the presentation of an argument, sort of give it the final finishing touch.

You made good use of the Einstein quote in that post. But it confused me at first glance, knowing the J K Rowling had come from you. I like the way you emphasized it with big bold lettering too. A person could not help but read it and think about it, very nicely done. Take care.

Thanks, I was trying to get that idea into the readers' minds before they started reading the post because that's the theme I was aiming at.

Job well done!

Now I'm hungry for BBQ! I'm going to have to look that place up, especially since they ship. The best I've had recently was a place called Jack Stack's in Kansas City. We spent the night in a hotel near there on the way home from Sedona earlier this year. We had Amstel with us and couldn't leave him alone so we ordered food to go and ate it in the hotel room. It was so good that neither of us said a word until it was gone.

That's a good testament to food quality right there when nobody is talking and just eating and enjoying the food.
Right now NB has as 20% off deal going on through the beginning of Sept. I was able to to get the Texas Fixins' package with shipping and all sent to him for around $125 , that is with the standard "second day air" shipping. They will ship next day but unless you are absolutely starving for it go with the 2 day shipping. You'll save a bunch on the shipping and it is well package so you don't have to worry about anything spoiling from the heat.
If you get some let me know what you think.
Sult
PS : Thanksgiving turkey has been coming from there for the last 15 years in our house.

That's for all the tips! I took a look at their website and their products look amazing. I think we may have seen them featured on one of the popular cooking shows but I can't remember which one. I'll definitely let you know what we think if we decide to order!

Happy Birthday to your oldest brother and that sounds like an awesome gift @sultnpapper! All this talk about bbq is making me hungry! Two questions..if you bbq ribs in the oven is it still considered bbq and when it comes to ribs do you prefer St Louis or Baby Backs? Just wondering...I love both! 💖

In my humble opinion; anything cooked in an oven is "baked" putting BBQ sauce on it doesn't make it BBQ'd. True BBQ is cooked in smoker using hardwood as the source of heat and the all important "smoke" which gives it the flavor.
As far as ribs go.... I like my ribs seasoned with a dry rub and slow smoked to perfection. The bigger the rib the better in my eyes. Have to eat a whole bunch of Baby Backs to make a good filling meal. Beef ribs are monster sized and two will damn near make a meal in their own rite.
Bottom line is ...any meat smoked is good meat in my book.
I'll pass the birthday wishes along, he is rehabbing right now from a knee replacement he had done three weeks ago so he isn't doing a lot of activities.
Thanks,
Sult

Lol..I kinda' knew what your the answer would be. I've watched the shows on the television with the bbq cook offs. I've never had or used a smoker but would love to one day. I'll take some good ribs any way but I agree about the Baby Backs..yummy but not much there. We've been getting the St Louis ribs which are meatier and (geez) it's been years since I've had a beef rib. I took photos the last couple times we made them but haven't posted them. Not true bbq though as they were made in the oven. They were still pretty good but I know the real thing is better. Used to be a place nearby but they closed a while ago..sigh. 🙂

People get really creative in designing their smokers, this one is from Woody's Smokehouse . It is their portable one for fairs, rodeos and festivals.

That is pretty cool looking! I love everything about it! Thanks for sharing that! 😉

You are most welcome, Mam. I need to get my FIRED account cleaned up this weekend. You still good on giving me a hand?
Thanks,
Sult

Yep, whenever you're ready! In another two weeks I should be outta there too! 😉
