On November 30, 1835 in Florida, Missouri was born Samuel Langhorne Clemens, who was later to be known under the literary pseudonym Mark Twain. He was writer, satirist and American humorist, author of the novels : The Adventures of Tom Sawyer (1876), A Yankee at King Arthur's Court (1889), the Adventures of Huckleberry Finn (1885) often called "The Great American Novel".

Autodidact and the typical exponent of the American dream, Twain was also one of his fiercest critics, revealing the gulf between appearances and reality, between American illusion and what left from it.

Despite his financial problems, Twain was renowned for his humor and good mood, thanks to which he enjoyed tremendous popularity throughout the world. At its peak, he was probably the most popular American of that time. In 1907, the public crowded at the Jamestown Exhibition just to see Mark Twain.

He has enjoyed the friendship of several celebrities, including author and critic William Dean Howells, politician and author Booker T. Washington, engineer and inventor Nikola Tesla, writer Helen Keller, and the tycoon Henry Huttleston Rogers. Twain filed for bankruptcy , but he received help from Henry Huttleston Rogers which paid all his pre-bankruptcy creditors in full.

Twain was born at short time after the appearance of Halley's Comet, and he predicted that he would "go out with it" as well; he died the day after the comet returned in 1910 and is buried in Elmira, New York state.

Mark Twain was called the "greatest humorist America has produced", and the American author William Faulkner wrote about Twain that he was the "father of American literature"
