A 17 year old Walks Into A Bar

in #dancer7 years ago (edited)

I'm not sure how many of you went away to college. But if you did you know what it's like. That first taste of freedom; away from the watchful eyes of parents and adult figures who actually give a fuck about your whereabouts. No checking in, no curfews, and definitely no rules! Now, imagine you're 17. And you just moved to New York City.

That was me. 10 years ago today, almost, I moved here. I was young and hungry, and reckless.

There is a reason they don't let 17 year olds into bars! Good Lord! Not that being underage ever stopped me from going out and getting crazy. We had what you call, "Welcome Week" for freshman at NYU. It's the week before school starts. You're meant to be learning the city and getting comfortable with where you need to go for class and such. I was a dance major. All my classes were in the same building. So you know what I did Welcome Week? I. Drank. My. Weight. In. Vodka. So, so much vodka. And tequila. And whiskey.

Oh my gosh.

I honestly consumed entirely too much alcohol before I was legally allowed. I was used to being the youngest, no one else was still a minor when they came to college, and all my friends started turning 21 in our senior year. So it was in that vein that 2 years later I celebrated my 21st birthday. 365 days early. The funny thing is, when you say you're turning 21 at a bar- no one stops to verify. I reserved the 2nd floor bar at Bourbon Street - a Louisiana style bar in the theater district. We had the place to ourselves essentially, and could venture down to the main bar for dancing or whatever else!

I was in my last year of school (I finished in 3 years) and anxious to see what came next after graduation. Excited for a New York that wasn't based on NYU dorms and dining hall food. Little did I know it was going to get worse, before it ever got better!

Great way to begin college hahhah Awesome story. I mean did you collect most of the stories from the people around you because you were too drunk? lol
I would sit and listen to others telling me how crazy and funny i was the night before, while trying not to puke from laughing lol Amazing times

hahaha sometimes I remembered. Sometimes I there was a retelling. And sometimes I had to rely on photo evidence to piece the night together haha. Thanks for reading :)

All I remember from NYU is booze, dorms, strawberrys, wash sq, free movies in tisch.

I remember my first time visitng New York, I was just starting secondary school think I was 10 or 11. I remember walking around thinking, wow it's really like how them rappers said. I was around Flat bush junction at the time.
The other thing I remember was how at nights it was like everyone comes out. Nighttime was more busy than daytime!
