Daoism as a philosophical doctrine appeared in China at about the same time as Confucianism, during the Chunqiu-Zhanguo period (VIII-III BC). At first, this teaching was of a rather abstract nature and was not connected with traditional religious beliefs.
Supporters of this doctrine, as well as Confucians, opposed their contemporary reality. They condemned the tendencies of the socio-political life of that time and opposed the continuous wars and civil strife, murders and betrayal, self-interest and money-grubbing.
