As a teacher, I find that students are robbed of the opportunity to research and conceptualize their environment simply because they are forced to think in a certain way. The lack of net neutrality is in my opinion, a contributor to this issue. After looking through different projects that support decentralization and net neutrality, I came across Decenternet.
DNet (Decenternet)
The decentralization of certain industries is not something new. We have seen the decentralization of money, energy and to a certain extent education, decentralized in the form of a particular token. However, what makes Decenternet truly remarkable is its aim to decentralized almost everything.
Decenternet as an umbrella is divided into many other platforms. There is the a search engine called Liberty, a public domain search engine that searches the web for information. Unlike Google, Liberty is free from any influence from other parties that seek to sway your perception through the search results.
In addition, Decenternet also has a browser called the Osiris browser, a private and the fastest internet browser, as claimed by its creators. The idea behind the browser is to replace data centers with a country's local internet infrastructure. Imagine if most of the computers of the world supported the Osiris browser through mining, using its 'proof-of-reliability' concept. In other words, imagine a world where instead of having data centers managing and distributing information throughout the world, you have thousands, if not millions of computers by home users replacing the functionality of these data centers. In theory, you would have speeds that would dwarf even the likes of Google.
In the whitepaper, Decenternet gave the example of having four million computers in South Korea to complete this task. The speed, when compared to Google Jupiter's was twice as fast, with Decenternet's speed topping out at about 242.34 terabytes per second. This is of course confined to South Korea and is merely an estimation.
Anuvys OS is also another platform under Decenternet. It is an operating system that is open sourced. Better yet, it does not collect information of the users unlike certain current operating systems. In addition, core assets on the Anuvys OS is also compatible with operating systems such as Windows.
Why Does Decenternet Work?
I believe Decenternet would work for the same reasons why bitcoin and many of the other blockchain projects would. That is its decentralized nature. One of my favorite blockchain project is power ledger, which is the peer to peer marketplace for renewable energy. Conventionally, if you wanted to sell energy, you would need to do so through a centralized, government entity, at least that's the case in my country. However, power ledger bypasses this stage, giving more back to the consumers and the producers of energy.
Similarly, Decenternet does the same, it decentralizes the internet away from the hands of a few and give power back to the people. I believe decentralization is the first step towards enlightenment. I am of course not speaking of the Buddhist kind of enlightenment, but enlightenment in terms of knowledge. Whenever a centralized entity censors certain information from the public, you deprive the people of certain pieces of information to build an opinion. This causes many of them to eventually stop questioning the information fed to them.
However, I have hope, there is a Chinese saying though, 'You can't contain fire with paper'. In other words, you can never hold back the truth. As such, it won't be long before people turn to Decenternet as a source of information. I experienced first hand how many people in my country turned away from mainstream media to Facebook during one of the elections. At that time, Facebook was the decentralized media, no one controlling it and information was free and without influence from certain parties. As such, I believe with the launch of Decenternet and all its platforms, it will empower the people with much needed and unbiased information.
Conclusion
In general, I think Decenternet holds a lot of promise. My only critique though is that, certain platforms such as Janus under the Decenternet umbrella seems rather idealistic. Janus is an education platform for anyone. It is free, decentralized and aims to revolutionize education from the old model. As an educator, I don't see how that is possible without more information. I think a road-map for some of the many projects under Decenternet would definitely help people see what an ideal decentralized world looks like. I don't know about you, but I think the closest that any project has come thus far in decentralizing the world is Decenternet.

I believe that decentralized internet dapps will be the future. I especially like, that they seem to be realistic with their goal of launching end of 2020.
Compared to the useless hype by Substratum, who told everyone they would launch already last year with a beta, that was never delivered.
I do think though, that there will be valid startups, that will be quicker in this field than DNet. I guess TRON and EOS will already deliver working dapps for customers by next year.
I do agree, although I'm really interested in Janus (one of their platforms) for free education. Unlike the likes of OS university and bitdegree, Janus aims to tackle the real education problem, which is free education for all with the power of the blockchain. I'm super excited and hope that one day I can bring this into places where the poor can't afford a decent education.
Interesting to see what lessons DNet will learn from the mistakes that these early projects make (if any)
I suppose DNet already has in a way by tackling the root of the problem in the form of making information decentralized. By doing so, it creates a chain reaction all the other areas, commerce, education and operating systems will become open source and focused on solving real world problems that benefits the many instead of pursuing profit that benefits a select amount of people.
Very interesting way of looking at it. I honestly really do have a good feeling about this project!
