Veøy - Romsdalen Norway

in #deegram5 years ago

Veøya is a small yet very historical island located in Romsdalen. During the viking ages Veøy was a hub for trade and politics due to its stratetic position.

Due to unforgiving sea conditions along the coast, traders wanted to go in the Romsdal fjord to go on shore for the travel north to Nidaros (Trondheim), or east to modern day Oslo. Thanks to this position, Veøy gained wealth and influence, and a an imprtant battle on the neighbouring island gave Norway a new king in its time.

After the viking ages Veøy started collapsing and losing their power as more inland kaupangs (towns) started forming.

Later in the middle ages it became a religous hub for the surrounding area. The the last inhabitant (a narcissist who considered himself to be king because his blood was blue) died in 1948. Today Veøy is now no more than a local historical attraction, but still houses an old church from the 1300s.
