Hey guys, many people are talking about "Free State of Christiania", there are even TV reports about it and locals are recommending to visit Christiania, too. What did I actually know about Christiania? According to rumors, drugs are being sold on the streets and people are smoking grass in public without the state actually intervening (drugs are usually banned in Denmark). Lets figure out the true and explore Christiania together!

Colorful and alternative streets in Christiania

In fact, the Free State, founded in 1971, is an alternative and autonomous community. The area in the district is round about 43 ha and was build on a former military site. It was not always peaceful in the area, because in the early days it came again and again to clashes with the Danish authorities. Nowadays Danish authorities are accepting the way of life of the citizens in Christiania. About 1000 people are living there and the inhabitants are as mixed as the streets in the district. You will find alternative dropouts, welfare recipients, pensioners, immigrants, mothers without fathers, homeless people, unemployed, students and artists. Cars, firearms, knives, bulletproof vests, hard drugs, and motorcycle blues badges are prohibited in the area. However, "soft drugs" such as cannabis are allowed. These are offered and sold on the streets and stalls. The residents regard themselves as independent and manage many things themselves. Police do not exist in Christiania. Usually photography is prohibited. I was told that in case of violation, people will take away my camera, it can come to blows and the camera is thus destroyed. I was lucky, except for a few bad looks nothing happened to me.

Hallo Ihr Lieben, jeder spricht vom Freistaat Christiania, es gibt sogar viele Fernsehberichte darüber und selbst Einheimische reden darüber und empfehlen den Besuchern Christiania einen Besuch abzustatten. Was wusste ich tatsächlich über Christiania? Gerüchten zu Folge werden in Christiania Drogen auf den Strassen verkauft, Grass wird öffentlich auf den Strassen geraucht ohne das der Staat wirklich eingreift (Drogen sind in Dänemark normalerweise verboten). Nun was stimmt nun wirklich, auf nach Christiania würde ich mal sagen!

Farbenfroh und sehr alternativ

Tatsächlich ist der Freistaat, der 1971 gegründet wurde eine alternative und autonome Kommune. Die Gesamtfläche im Stadtteil beträgt ca 43 ha auf einem ehemaligen Militärgelände. Es war nicht immer friedlich im Gebiet, denn zu den Anfangszeiten ist es immer wieder zu Auseinandersetzungen mit den dänischen Behörden gekommen, heutzutage wird die autonome Lebensführung im Viertel akzeptiert. Ca 1000 Mitbewohner leben in Christiania und die Bewohner sind genau so bunt gemischt wie die Strassen im Viertel. Menschen wie Alternative Aussteiger, Sozialhilfeempfänger, Rentner, Immigranten, Mütter ohne Väter, Obdachlose, Arbeitslose, Studenten und Künstler leben dort. Autos, Feuerwaffen, Messer, kugelsichere Westen, harte Drogen und Abzeichen von Motorradblues sind im Viertel verboten. Jedoch sind „weiche Drogen“ wie zum Beispiel Cannabis erlaubt. Diese werden auf den Strassen und an Verkaufsständen angeboten und verkauft. Die Bewohner sehen sich als unabhängig an und verwalten vieles selbst. Polizei gibt es in Christiania nicht. Normalerweise ist fotografieren verboten. Mir wurde gesagt, dass bei Verstoss die Kamera aus der Hand genommen wird, es zu Handgreiflichkeiten kommen kann und die Kamera somit auch zerstört wird. Ich hatte Glück, bis auf ein paar böse Blicke ist mir nichts passiert.
