I understand it's to prevent bloat; so rather than potentially hundreds of smaller transactions each day, they're saved up until you hit the button. Streamlines something from a technical perspective.

That's interesting because I thought I read somewhere that you should redeem your rewards (i.e. check regularly) so that you always have as much steem as you can wield from your yield (especially when you don't have much of it). At the minimum I think it would save lots of people from 'wallet watching'... okay, it would save me from wallet watching :D
