On the other hand, Microsoft has done a lot over the last couple years to improve its standing with developers and the open source community. This is not the same Microsoft of the Gates/Ballmer era. Satya Nadella has been laser-focused on improving Microsoft's standing with open source projects and the developer community.

That said, hosting your companies trade secrets on GitHub was never a good idea.

Who would you rather have acquired GitHub? I'm guessing most of us just wanted it to stay the way it was.

Who knows? Maybe Microsoft will improve GitHub with better workflows. If they make it a better service, people will come back.

After all, Microsoft developed and open sourced the Visual Studio Code editor (lightweight IDE), which is by far my favorite for web development.

I think alot of people will continue to use github. All these tech giants have away of buying out competition. Its just like how Facebook bought whatsapp due to its potentials. Its a normal thing and i don't blame the guys for selling

Lol looks like gitlab will be getting tons of traffic soon since we'll be deserting github in its droves. Why do corporates always want to weasle in on a good thing with a solid community

There you go, you have my upvote , github is good for me.

yeah with that amount of cash it is understanable why they sold it.

It is just sad for us

Wow!!!
Thank you! Very useful information!

The great thing about open source software is you can always base yourself on another platform in hours.

Still though, after spending 7.5 Billion on it they will probably keep it about the same to keep people from leaving it; although I wouldn't be surprised to hear that Github had a sudden change in direction in about 2 1/2 years once everybody's got their guard down.

If I was a developer I probably would be leaving Github. Microsoft doesn't top my list for most trustworthy companies.
