Kangaroo Bar and Restaurant - Da Nang, Vietnam

in #dining4 years ago

Another establishment to definitely skip, this place has done a seriously good job on creating the impression that they are an authentic Australian dining establishment but without having anything be terribly Australian about it other than the name and that their burgers are made with Aussie beef.

It's located in a tourist part of town about 5 blocks from the beach and a vast majority of their visitors are one-timers who don't know any better - like myself. The entire area that I live in is filled with places like this so I need to go ahead and prepare myself for the fact that a majority of these spots are going to be substandard and also overpriced - such is the nature of tourist areas (I've lived in many such areas for the past 20 years - it's global.)

I will give the establishment this much praise though: The staff were superb. They were fast and friendly but then again, i might just be a bit traumatized from my horrible experience at Hannah's yesterday and my standards of friendliness have truly hit rock-bottom at this point.

The menu had decent prices with a "fish and chips" coming in at 100,000 VND or around $4 - which sounds like a great value until it arrives.

It would have been nice if they had mentioned that it was in fact, fish nuggets. In my world, this is an affront to the naming convention. This is NOT fish and chips although it technically is. It made me mad that they didn't have any vinegar either.

This was all forgivable until i took my first bite and could immediately tell that this was not even fried. They had clearly cooked it in a microwave because it was a million degrees inside and also soggy on the outside.

My friend ordered the "monsieur et madame" sandwich just to see what it is and apparently it is processed ham with egg and that "cheese" that comes individually wrapped in plastic. Basically it is disgusting. We were both too hungry to really care at this point so we both finished our incredibly basic meals, paid and left, never to return.

I am not angry at this place the way i was the other day at Hannah's and this is the reason why I am not going to bother to bad-mouth them online too much. A little friendliness goes a long way and even though their food was absolutely awful, I'll just avoid it in the future.

I suppose I am learning a lesson about the foodstuffs in this area in general: It just isn't going to be very high quality and doing some research online beforehand is likely necessary because of the western food places I have been to, around a dozen or so, at least half of them have been very unimpressive.

Location including GPS coords so you can avoid it

I know that this isn't unusual for a tourist area to have shite food. This is the way the food was, for the most part in both Krabi and Phuket but surprisingly not in Chiang Mai. From the few tourist places I lived in the United States the same phenomenon was true there as well. Tourist areas don't need to have good food, just good advertising gimmicks. Therefore, I am going to be leery of any place with a catchy name from this point forward.

Sort:

I was hoping it was a place that actually served Kangaroo.

Kangaroo is so delicious!

The meals here look barely passable in any establishment at any cost, I'd say.

As an Australian... this is definitely not Australian food!

I heard someone else say that about roo meat, I've never seen it on a menu anywhere though.

I am sorry. I think the food does not look good at all. What would Gordon Ramsey say. Lol

Ha...!!! I laughed out loud seeing that 'Fish and Chips' serving...
The sandwich made me chuckle as well.
It reminds me of a time I ordered Veal Parmigiana at a joint in Arkansas years ago. It turned out to be a commercial veal 'patty' with ketchup dumped on top...no cheese at all!!!

Wow, those meals look so incredibly disappointing. While they don't look like hate crimes on a plate or anything, I feel like you could probably find better looking food at the bottom of a soggy dumpster behind an Applebee's with how sad those look.

lol, when i get back to the states for a visit I am actually excited about going to chain restaurants like Applebees.

I will now be apprehensive anytime that I order a fish and chips over here, even though it isn't something I would normally order anyway. I don't know if it is even in business anymore and it will make me look low-class but I think Long John Silvers had a fantastic fish n chips.

You might be the first person who has been excited to go to an Applebee's in the last 25 years. But, I do understand why you would be, I enjoy going to a couple of chains like that every once and awhile still.

Long John Silvers is in fact still in business. I really enjoy their food, but I've made sure not to eat there in the last 3-4 years. The last time I ate there there was 4 of us, and all 4 of us basically were taking turns exploding on the toilet for the next 4-5 hours afterwards. So, I've just sworn them off sadly.

when i was a kid my mom would pick us up from school to take us to lunch at a fast food place of our choice. I always chose long johns and would order a very adult platter for a 7 year old kid. I always threw up back at the school because a 3rd grader is not supposed to have that much grease all at one time.

I think 7 year old you made a fine choice. I mean, grease is a large part of a growing child's needs though. Every adult knows that.

Especially if you're panic prepping for Corona-Chan, apparently. Gonna make a post tomorrow at some point with some pictures of our local store. For some reason people started panic buying vegetable oil/cooking oils, which I guess a bit makes more sense than everyone buying up all the toilet paper and hoarding that shit like it's their lesbian porn collection.

oh nice. I'll be looking for that one

You are going to find 100's of places just like that who don't care about repeat business as it is for tourists only. Microwaved fish nuggets sounds terrible. I have experienced a deep fried burger once when every bite was accompanied with ludicrous amount of oil giving you the impression it was a juicy burger. Time to find where the locals are all eating.

i've found a few of those spots where the locals eat but this was always going to be a problem by choosing to live where I did. I saw this coming :)

Fish and Chips?... this is Fish and Chips!

IMG_4024.JPG

It needs to be slightly fish-shaped to pass.. and no vinegar? Even at Long John Silver's in AZ they gave us vinegar.. terrible fish and chips though.

One of the things that I want to travel to the UK for the most is so that I can get a "proper" fish and chips, in a newspaper, so i can eat it in my car at the beach.

The days of the newspaper laded paper containing Fish and Chips are gone. Fears about ink poisoning spread and that was the end.

You can still get them wrapped in plain paper though, the chips tend to stick to it which is not so good.

Did they at lease serve Foster's? It actually looks like the kind of place that probably doesn't serve alcohol at all. That is too bad that you have been striking out lately. I guess there are going to be some misses before you find some hits. It's all part of moving to a new place.

no Fosters pal. But I believe that Australians don't really rate Fosters anyway and that is just a marketing campaign for the USA!

I am sure you are right!

LOL All the food looks terrible sorry! Even an Asian like myself think 'What? Fish & chips' and the sandwich looks like some cheapy ones I had in Thailand when I was a kid 10THB you know

doing some research online beforehand is likely necessary

I think making friends with locals through something like couchsurfing hangout app would be a good idea too. I use that all the time when I feel like I'm in the dark.

Good luck with your new life in VN! I'm in Chile at the moment and still in culture shock! lol what the hell is going on here - -

i have always been curious about that part of the world as a place to live... not so much Chile because it can get too cold. You really are going all over the place aren't you?

Right now I am. I think I freaked out being too long in Thailand last time so now, I don't wanna go back just yet.

Chile right now is hot and at night it gets a bit chilly and cozy in a blanket.

Hope you stay safe and sound from the covid ✌️

well you have already seen a lot more of that part of the world than I ever have. Good for you!

hahahhaha seems like you're discovering the worst place of Da Nang! Thanks for sharing! Definitely I won't come to them! I discover some nice ones! Check on my profile! :)

Howdy gooddream! Those dishes looked disgusting. The only thing that could be worse is yesterday's slop. lol. Your friendliness standards have dropped off the charts! lol.

Sorry you have to go through this as you discover the good joints over there but it sure is entertaining for us!

well, the way it is looking so far, and this doesn't surprise me at all, the smaller shops that focus on making Vietnamese food, particularly the ones that don't really even have a restaurant but more of just some chairs on the side of the road, tend to be the better places. Much cheaper too.

Every now and then I just find myself wanting some tacos and it seems, at least this far, that this is going to be tough to find.

That must be the only place in the world with no Mexican restaurants! lol. You might have to make your own and have a taco party.

oh they have them, they just aren't good. I don't think they can get the sauces. Once this global panic dies down I may see about importing them because I think there would be an interest in that.
