Dear Friends ,

From natural disasters to colossal collisions on the high seas , the ocean"s bed is now the resting place of many giant , man made vessels ..............
Some of them are -

  1. SS Atalantic Express :
Country - Greece Year Sunk - 1979 How it sunk - Collision with a tanker in tropicle storms Tonnage - 293,000
it was a heavy rain with very thick fogs and two ships couldn't see each other and until it was 600 yards away and it was too late to turn the ship around that's how they had the collision. The next day another larger explosion increased the rate to 7,000-15,000 gallons an hour. And and august 3 the ship sank at the position of this coordinates 13° 5 0 N, 55° 28 0 W spilled 287,00 metric tonnes of crude oil into the Caribbean 5Th largest oil spill Largest ship based oil spill.

  2. Costa Concordia :
Country - Italy Year Sunk - 2012 How it sunk - Ran aground on sharp Rocks Tonnage - 114,000
The ship was holed on the left-hand side, started taking on water and began to tilt. Engine rooms were flooded and power was lost.
The crew struggled to assess the situation and relayed incomplete information to the Italian authorities.
At 21:52 the chief engineer and electrical officer tried and failed to start the ship's emergency diesel generator.
Shortly afterwards, passengers were told that the ship was suffering a "blackout", but that the situation was under control. The same information was given to the harbour master at Civitavecchia.

  3. MV Derbyshire :
Country - UK Year Sunk - 1980 How it sunk - Sank in tropical storms Tonnage - 92,000
On 9 September 1980, Derbyshire hove-to in Typhoon Orchid some 230 miles from Okinawa, and was overwhelmed by the tropical storm killing all aboard. Derbyshire never issued a Mayday distress message.
The search for Derbyshire commenced on 15 September 1980 and was called off six days later when no trace of the vessel was found, and it was declared lost. Six weeks after Derbyshire sank, one of the vessel's lifeboats was sighted by a Japanese tanker.
In June 1994, the wreck of Derbyshire was found at a depth of 4 km, spread over 1.3 km. An additional expedition spent over 40 days photographing and examining the debris field looking for evidence of what sank the ship. Ultimately it was determined that waves crashing over the front of the ship had sheared off the covers of small ventilation pipes near the bow. Over the next 30+ hours, seawater had entered through the exposed pipes into the forward section of the ship, causing the bow to slowly ride lower and lower in the water. Eventually, the bow was completely exposed to the full force of the rough waves which caused the massive hatch on the first cargo hold to buckle inward allowing hundreds of tons of water to enter in moments. As the ship started to sink, the second, then third hatches also failed, dragging the ship underwater. As the ship sank, the water pressure caused the ship to be twisted and torn apart by implosion.

  4. RMS Titanic :
Country - UK Year Sunk - 1912 How it sunk - Collision with iceberg Tonnage - 46,000

The largest passenger liner in service at the time, Titanic had an estimated 2,224 people on board when she struck an iceberg at around 23:40 (ship's time)[a] on Sunday, 14 April 1912. Her sinking two hours and forty minutes later at 02:20 (05:18 GMT) on Monday, 15 April resulted in the deaths of more than 1,500 people, which made it one of the deadliest peacetime maritime disasters in history.

For a country attempting to rebuild its economy and reputation after World War II, Andrea Doria was an icon of Italian national pride.
