Yeah, I was trying to find a graphic highlighting this very point, but couldn't be arsed searching for too long...

Duckduckgo does indeed use Google's results. Two other ways to locate information:
(1) Microsoft's Bing.com (better video search, among others)
[Bing] http://bing.com
[Google's deep-pocketed competitor never went away]
(2) Russian search engine Yandex.com (English interface), Yandex.ru (Russian interface)
[Yandex] http://Yandex.com
[Yandex] http://Yandex.ru
[Don't be afraid of the Russian bogeymen]

I'm not finding the english default setting.
Oops! There was a simple fix: just type Yandex.com (.com) instead of Yandex.ru (.ru). Everything should then be in English. In the top right, there seems to be a language icon which says EN, but it doesn't offer any other choices.
I'll have more to say about Yandex in a future posting :-)
No matter what search engine you use, assume that data is being collected, so I wouldn't worry about any "security risk" (just be sure to exercise common sense security precautions).
If "colluding" with the Russians is good enough for the "cloud people", it should be good enough for us "deplorables" (AKA "dirt people").
Oops! Sorry about that. I assumed the settings would stick (I'm all right with a Russian interface). I'll explore some more and turn this comment into an independent post
