A public Wi-Fi network is less secure than your own, private one, because you don't know who built it, or who else connects to it. Ideally, you'd never have to use it; then, to use your laptop as a hotspot. Nevertheless, with a few simple steps, you can still restrict the potential damage from public Wi-Fi for times that's not necessary or even feasible.
