Good news! 18 calves of right whales are born, a critically endangered species

It must be taken into account that the number of calves per individual is very small, this happens in marine mammals. They are not like some invertebrates or fish, which can leave a very large descent, as is the case with crabs, sea snails, octopuses, etc.** So it is great news to know that 18 babies have been born of these enormous endangered beings**.

A newspaper article published in BioGuia (with additional data from IUCN)

These 18 births make us wonder, is it still too late to save this species? year after year, the famous red list of endangered species increases. The aforementioned hatchlings have appeared from November 2019 to recent dates

Valuable information from the IUCN Red List

At the end of 2018, the estimated number of sightings of this species of whale was 409 (Pettis et al. 2020), of which less than 250 were not yet sexually mature.

The population decreased during 2011-2020 due to the fact that the whales died more frequently (mainly driven by entanglement in fishing gear and the fact that the whales collide with boats) in addition, they were observed to reproduce less than in previous years.

This is why this species is listed as Critically Endangered, will this be the end of its threat?

There are still more dangers for the right whale

Although we mentioned earlier that deaths since 2011 have been from entanglements and collisions, there are still other additional dangers.

There are several reasons why these animals have seen their population minimize. The first is due to hunting. For several centuries, humans slaughtered whales for their oil. Today, hunting has been prohibited in these animals, despite this, countries like Japan still continue to hunt whales.
However, in recent times climate change has caused them the most damage. Changes in sea temperatures have made whales unable to adapt.

There is still hope

An important fact is that they are not animals that survive in captivity. Therefore, there are no living specimens in any aquarium in the world. The cetaceans of this species that survive in the wild are the ones that can keep the species alive.

One thing that is certain is that we may never be able to see these large cetaceans in large numbers together, but they are still there. We have caused the damage ourselves, so the survival of the right whale depends on us.

DNA - Densifying Nature-Appreciation

IMG_20200208_120948.png

DNA is a not-for-profit organization with the aim to foster and DENSIFY NATURE-APPRECIATION and to establish REPORTS OF BIODIVERSITY DATA that is contributed by all of us Hiveans and subsequently cataloged and published on a public accessible website one day by the DNA Team.

Therefore DNA searches for HIGH-QUALITY posts that aim to DETERMINE and DESCRIBE and the BIODIVERSITY AROUND YOU with added EXPLANATIONS and INFORMATION. If you want to participate you will find a TEMPLATE IN the DNA DISCORD that you can use for this purpose. You can then PUBLISH your posts in any of our assigned DNA COMMUNITIES that are mentioned below and leave your link the the SPECIES HUNT CHANNEL that is also located in the DNA DISCORD. We will do the compilation and one day the publication on our website for you ^^

DNA also offer a CURATION SERVICE, using the @dna.org account, for all your SPECIES HUNT or other BIODIVERSITY RELATED posts that we find in one of the 3 assigned communities. It is also a CURATION TRAIL. Just add the #dna TAG if you think that any of your posts is what they may be looking for. But our MAIN FOCUS will always be on the SPECIES HUNT posts.

At the moment DNA is also the home of the #amazingnature for all your post about the amazing nature all around us, the #featheredfriends for all you great posts about our feathered friends and the #fungilovers for all your posts about fungi and mushrooms ^^ But we hope that more nature related communities will join, or maybe some Hiveans start their own little project there ;) .. Maybe even you?

If you are INTERESTED in DNA, please do not hesitate to ask about it, or directly JOIN US in the DNA DISCORD ;)
