China bans killing of dogs and cats for purpose of consumption

in #dogs4 years ago

Those of us that love our pets and even dogs and cats that are not our pets find it very difficult to imagine that anyone would want to eat these animals but this enters and entirely different realm about whether or not we should eat any animals. I'm not trying to address that - I'm just happy to see that countries are starting to ban the killing of dogs and cats for the sake of eating them.

It has become something in the spotlight since the talks about Coronavirus originating in a wet-market where all sorts of what a Westerner would consider "strange" or "awful" choices for food that China's dog meat trade is a big business. I can't think of anything i would rather not eat and while I have known that this meat trade has existed for hundreds of years and that the meat trade in general is a rather brutal and inhumane operation that the videos (which I will NOT post) of the dogs being dragged in and brutally killed were tough to watch. In some of the more gruesome videos that dogs were not actually dead yet when they were being cut open. Their life of agony up to that point must have been just as bad.

now if that doesn't break your heart I'm afraid you likely don't have a soul. One of the most troubling things about the dog meat trade is that you don't have to look very far on the internet in order to find stories of people whose pets were stolen from their yards and there is almost always just one destination for these kidnapped pups. I don't know about you but this would be a harrowing and traumatizing experience for me that would result in me going full vigilante similar to the Liam Neeson's character is Taken.

Before I get too worked up and emotional about this let's focus on the positive message that is the point behind this post and is a ray of light.

The Chinese Ministry of Agriculture has released their "“National Catalogue of Livestock and Poultry Genetic Resources” and dogs and cats were absent from the list of approved animal food products. It has always been on the list prior to 2020.

While this lack of dogs and cats on the list doesn't specifically make their consumption illegal, it does make it illegal to kill them for the purpose of meat - which is essentially the same thing. Whether or not these laws are actually enforced I can't say, I don't really know a great deal about how China operates.

I do know, however, that in 2014 Thailand enacted a similar stance and although the consumption of what we consider to be domesticated animals was already quite rare (mostly just in the rural North East of the country) the law made the trade untenable and now it likely doesn't exist at all. The ruling in Thailand made it illegal to kill a dog or cat by anyone other than a veterinarian.

So while this doesn't pertain specifically to Krabi Animal Welfare it does pertain to what a big part of our entire purpose is: To eliminate the suffering of them and if China takes this new action seriously, this is a massive step in the right direction.

I think it is disgusting what they do. If it is not breeding cats and dogs to supply for the toy fur trade then they are farming them for food. I saw that they had re classified them as pets and not for farming. How can you have a dog and cat farm in the first place is mind boggling.

it's also important to look at how some places in the west run breeding farms for prized animals such as pit bulls and other expensive breeds. Some pretty awful living conditions in those areas as well. I'll focus on that next maybe.

I live in a country that is on the brink of banning the dog meat trade as well. It is already looked down upon by most of the population but there are still some shops that openly sell dog meat.

I don't know a great deal about where you live but i have heard that this is one of the things Vietnam is famous for that is less-than-awesome. Let's hope they follow suit and also ban the trade.

yeah let's. I have only seen one place that was selling dog but it was pretty shocking.

I was unaware that people even consumed dog meat until I was in this part of the world. Up until that point in my life I always just kind of assumed it was some end-of-days fiction that was reserved for movies.

well i had heard stories of it but it seemed so brutal that i couldn't believe that many people actually did it. China seems to not really care about these sorts of things though as they are constantly opening shark fin soup shops in Thailand, as I am sure you have seen.
