Our hero removes one of the gears from the machine, intending to use it to fix the machine in the other room. Just then, a sinister shadow creeps in through the doorway. Someone is coming, and there's not much time to react.

What has our hero gotten himself into. How fast can he fix that? if he was to run, where would he run to? Down the stairs? This is confusion.
Hide behind the machine for now and prepare to face that creature.
I guess the hero would be courageous to fight back with the enemy if ever it will attack him because he will serve the gear as his shield.
He has to speed up the repair of the faults and he has to concentrate on the lower part because he is in ruins
Since its only one shadow, he should take out the threat and continue
He must talk assertively to see if the shadow is somehow afected emotionally.
Our hero rushes to the side of the doorway, holding the gear in a defensive stance in case the shadow turns out to be the giant guard coming in to stop him!
From the diagram above, I see a stairway probably leading to an underground room. I think he should hide there immediately before he is being noticed.
He should hide behind the machine to see if it is a friend or an enemy that is approaching. If it is an enemy......
then he should be ready for either a fight or flight. If it is a fight, then he already has a weapon in hand
