Its the time of the year again when the air is frigid and the temperature and humidity level is low. keeping your skin hydrated under normal circumstances is hard enough,during the winter season it becomes even harder but keeping your skin hydrated prevents it from becoming chapped itchy and cracked.

What causes dry skin:
Dry skin is caused when the skin is stripped of its protective oil,this causes moisture to escape from the skin and when there is not enough moisture in the outermost layer of the skin it becomes dry and this effect can get worse during winter when humidity is low.
Other common causes may include;
.Medical skin condition.
.The ageing process.
.Using too much hot water.
.Using harsh bath soaps.
.Use the wrong moisturizer,contact your doctor if you are not sure of the right kind of moisturizer for your skin.
The downside of having dry skin and why you should be worried;
You might think that its no big deal to have dry skin,but having dry skin may have connections to health and other emotional problems that can affect with your daily life. Dry skin can cause;
.Insecurities,
.eczema,
.dermatitis,
.cracks on the skin surface that may be
painful.
How to treat dry skin:
.Always keep skin hydrated by drinking lots of water and avoid drinking too much alcohol.
.use less hot water,as hot soapy water strips the skin of its protective oil which in turn subjects it to drying,instead use warm water and avoid staying in the showers for more than 10 min.
.Use soap minimally and only in necessary areas such as hands,feet,armpit,face,groin,also consider using fragrance free soaps.
.use moisturizer that goes with your skin there are certain moisturizer made specially for dry skin
Conclusion:
Dry skin during winter is common but if your skin is severely dry contact your doctor so that he can advice you on certain chemicals to stay away from.
