Watch Harvesting Aronia Berries with the Family! My First DTube Video! video on DTube

In this video I take you on a visit to my husband's family farm where we spend an afternoon harvesting Aronia Berries (also known as Chokeberries) and spend a beautiful day enjoying the sights and sounds of a late summer afternoon!

Why I Love Aronia Berries!

According to numerous health studies and resources, but particularly Dr. Mercola.com and AroniaBerryNews.com, the health benefits of Aronia Berries are numerous. Aronia Berries score the highest of all berries and fruit, including blueberries, on the ORAC (oxygen radical absorbance capacity), a lab test that attempts to quantify the total antioxidant capacity in foods. And why are antioxidants so good? They protect our cells from damaging oxidation. Antioxidants "help eradicate free radicals in your bloodstream, organs and tissues that could otherwise cause healthy cells to mutate," Organic Facts explains. Don't know about you, but I'll have no mutations, please and thank you!

Aronia Berries are known to help fight a plethora of conditions, such as cancer, diabetes, inflammation, obesity, and some infections to name a few. They are also linked with anti-aging, blood pressure regulation and heart health.

The dark blue/purple hue of these little gems signifies high antioxidant levels and the significant amout of fiber contributes to improved gut health, according to Mercola.com

With all of the benefits from this one little berry, what's not to love? As you can see from the video, they're extremely easy to harvest and did I mention that they are naturally resistant to pests and are therefore easily raised organically?

And to add to it all, I love the taste! So far, we've enoyed them fresh, dried, frozen, mixed into trail mix, baked (into an Aronia berry coffee cake, thanks to Grandma!) and last weekend I brewed an Aronia Berry/Mint leaf tea. Delicious!

A Word of Caution

While these berries may be the Bees Knees of superfood right now, Dr. Mercola did issue this word of caution:
"Aronia berries contain oxalic acid, a naturally occurring substance often found in fruits and vegetables, which may crystalize and encourage the development of urinary tract oxalate stones. Anyone with a history of oxalate stones should limit their intake and always drink adequate amounts of water to avoid an uncomfortable onset. Oxalic acid may also interfere with the absorption of magnesium, calcium and other minerals."

“Try them, try them, and you may! Try them and you may, I say.”

If you haven't tried them but do have access to these berries at the grocery store or are able to order them dried, I encourage you to give them a try!
As you can see from the video, we decided to stock up for the long winter ahead.
Now, if I just had more freezer space!

Hope you enjoyed the video! We certainly had a blast making it and sharing our day with you! Be sure to leave us a comment! Have you tried Aronia Berries? How do you enjoy them?
