This is not going to happen fast, but something will always take it's place.
Bitcoin itself won't stay popular if it doesn't change in the way it works currently (slow, expensive to use).
But i don't think a government will ever get a real grasp on a Crypto/Blockchain-currency while maintaining it's value.
As a store of value, or digital gold, Bitcoin has its use. As a currency? Nope.

Bitcoin is still the king. Being the first on the blockchain brings some sort of value. It also has the functionality of digital gold. When lightning network will become viable, BTC will surge even more.

If that's true, that's a silly law. I wish we lived in a world where each individual truly owned what he owned and didn't have to pay dues and check in with a higher authority. And yes the government did make it illegal for people to own gold back in the day. I'm skeptical as to how many people actually turned theirs in.
