How to restore headlights properly with a brillo pad and a protective silicon coating

in #dtube5 years ago (edited)

I've seen a variety of how to restore headlights properly videos on YouTube and most of them look like they would not work long term so I thought I'd try it with a brillo pad and some water and then add a protective silicon coating over the lens after drying it off. It worked perfectly and the headlights are still clear today.

The brillo pad is just abrasive enough to get rid of the gunk on the headlight without scratching the surface of the lens.
It is no use just cleaning the headlights and not using a new protective coating as they will get very dirty again very quickly.

This is a quick and cheap method to bring your headlights back into tip top condition and most of what you need you probably already have in the kitchen. If not?

I can't believe how easy this was to do and cheap too.

Shinny :)

Super dooper shiney. These misty gungy headlights are an MOT failure so this is a cheap and simple fix. :-)

Totally brilliant! And very timely as the dark is now descending. My headlights are terrible and I live out in the middle of nowhere with no streetlights, so it's very very dark at night. I will go try this as soon as I find some silicone. Thank you!

You can use the brillo pads to clean the gunk off without applying the silicone and they will come up super clean but will get dirty again pretty quick.

The advantage of the silicone is that it stops the dirt from sticking to the headlights in future.

Think of it as a prophylactic for your headlights lol

I drive on gravel roads every day, so dirt is inevitable, especially now that everything is getting muddy and will stay that way until next July! I think the silicone is an absolute necessity for me.

I've been doing a bit of gravel road driving too lately so this coating is a must to keep the dirt to a minimum.

Thanks for the tip. That was too easy. Mine badly need restoring! I always have Brillo pads on hand!

It is super easy to do. Literally less than two minutes start to finish and you have super clean headlights. Winter is coming.

Any tips for renewing clear coat? LOL!

Also, did you use the Brillo pad dry? I did watch the video and it looked dry.

I just dipped the brillo pad in a cup of water. Just a little to give it lubrication to glide over the lens.
Quick and easy. 👍😋

Was the finishing spray necessary? Could I try it without spraying it?

It will still clean it but the spray protects it from future dirt and grime.

Ah, ok. I will do that for sure when I return from my trip. On my way to Wales now.

It will still clean it
But the spray protects it from
Future dirt and grime.
