Do you have an upcoming interview and are unsure of what style of makeup you should apply? Occasions where you don’t want to noticeably appear with a lot of makeup on—while still looking stylish and fresh—can be tricky since you don’t always know what is appropriate.
Wearing too much makeup can come off the wrong way depending on the field of work and whether your interviewer is male or female. However, wearing a bit of makeup is perceived "more professional" than being completely barefaced.
Personally, I would wear very light eye makeup. This includes foundation, blush, a bit of neutral shades eyeshadow, mascara, brow gel, and nude lipstick—but nothing too dramatic.
Create a Professional Makeup Look for Your Next Interview
To get started, you will need the following tools.
• Moisturiser
• Tinted moisturiser or BB/CC cream in your shade
• Foundation brush or your fingers
• Concealer
• Concealer brush or damp makeup sponge
• Loose powder
• Small fluffy powder brush
• Big powder brush
• Blush
• Blush Brush
• Neutral eyeshadow
• Eyeshadow brushes
• Mascara
• Brow gel
• Nude lipstick or tinted lip balm
Step 1: Prep your skin
Before you begin, start with a clean face and moisturise with the right product that suits your skin type. Don’t forget to wash your hands as well and then apply the moisturiser to your face.
Be gentle to your skin while you’re applying it with your fingers and let the moisturiser soak in for a bit.
Step 2: Base
Now it’s time to base! Choose whatever product and finish you want to achieve (tinted moisturiser or BB/CC cream) but keep it light-weight as we are going for a natural finish. However, I still would recommend applying light to medium coverage and avoid any full coverage finishes.
Once you know which product you will use, take a bit on the back of your hand and start applying it onto your face. Begin blending by using circular motions with your fingers to get an even and flawless finish. With this technique, you will prevent your base from looking strange.
Step 3: Concealer
Choose a concealer that’s a bit lighter than your skin or the same shade as your base. This will add a bit more coverage and brighten the under and upper eye area where needed. By tapping your finger, add product around your lid area as well.
If needed you can use the concealer to cover any blemishes or discolorations as well and then pat, it into the skin with your finger.
Step 4: Set
Depending on your skin type, you might want to take a small fluffy brush and set the concealed areas so that you will have long-lasting wear.
Step 5: Brow Gel
Add brow gel to your eyebrows to keep them in place. If you’re using a tinted brow gel, it will add a bit of colour as well.
Step 6: Eyes
With your eye makeup, you can go very simple and natural by choosing one or two shades to apply. This can be normal eyeshadow or cream that dries on it owns depending on your personal preference.
I like to go with a powder eyeshadow duo—where one shade is light brown and the other champagne. It’s simple but creates a quick, timeless look.
First, take the darker shade of the two and focus it on the outer corner of your eyelid. Using your finger, take the lighter shade and apply this on the rest of your main lid area.
Dip into the shadow once more if you feel that it’s not enough and then blend the two colours together for a flawless look. That’s it!
Step 7: Mascara
Mascara is a great product as this will open up your eyes and create a more impactful look. Don’t forget to apply mascara on both your upper and lower lash line.
Step 8: Blush
Use a blush that suits your skin tone to look the most natural. If you don’t know what shade you should pick, pinch your cheeks and see what colour your cheeks will turn into—of course, don’t hurt yourself.
Once you know the shade and finish (matte or shimmer), you can take a blush brush and apply it onto the apples of your cheeks. Then, blend it towards the hairline and down to get rid of any harsh lines. Don’t forget to smile while you’re applying the blush.
Step 9: Set the base
If needed, and depending on your base and skin type you have, you might want to take a big powder brush to set your makeup for a long-lasting finish. Take a bit of powder onto the brush and press it into the skin areas you might sweat or produce oil during the day.
Step 10: Lips
For lips, you can go with a nude tinted lip balm or cream lipstick. Add a bit onto the lip and blend.
With these simple 10 steps, you are ready to create a professional, subtle makeup look that will help you land the interview!
