Steem is a blockchain. steemit is just the first app on the steem blockchain, where things posted show altogether. There are already up to 500 apps on the steem blockchain (you can find this on steemprojects.com). all various activities from these apps, even some tests show on steemit.com
So not only actual blogs. What is reward is value. content as in blogs is one form of content. I created another form of content called ulogs for instance and building the app for it on ulogs.org
