Ecency Mobile Review

Yesterday, I was outside and wanted to post a picture.
So, I tried out Ecency again.
I didn't like it.

pro:

  • Shows all votes, even below the hivemind HP cutoff.
  • Can send 'native' notifications to my phone.

con:

  • Spams my phone's notifications for completely unimportant dust-votes.
  • uploading pictures gives no feedback, it happens in background, and finishes at some point, no way of telling when.
This is the main reason I tried using it: quick/easy access to my phone's gallery and upload.
  • Markdown for code-blocks gets ignored and displayed as a set of code-lines.
This isn't the same. I posted a block for a reason:
    this is this
    this is someting different

meanwhile: peakd parses even these indented bulletpoints beatifully.
  • When I click on an Ecency notification, it sometimes opens a totally unrelated link.
  • This morning, Ecency bricked itself completely (see screenshot above... it froze like that)
This also happened last time I tried it, years ago.

To be fair:

  • my Android version isn't up-to-date.
  • my Ecency version isn't up-to-date.

Conclusion

The most annoying part isn't necessarily Ecency's fault: I can't type on a smartphone keyboard. It's a mess. I pity the people who write long posts with their phone. I don't even know how they do it.
When trying to delete passages, I always end up clicking (fat-fingering) the wrong letters.
Yesterday, I accidentally deleted part of the image link and there was no undo button, so I had to erase the whole link and link the picture again.

That aside, the experience was still clunky.
Just like liketu, I want to like the app, but it simply doesn't do its job.
(I tried liketu after Hivefest Amsterdam and it also bricked itself)

Maybe I am just not hip to this smartphone stuff. I hate it.
I am sick of how updating works and that every new Android release slows down my phone more.

That all being said, peakd is going crazy, too. They are doing too much.
Just look at the market app they built: The UX is overengineered so that even such a simple thing as an order book has me confused and I have to double-check everything.
(The other day, I confused buy and sell order side)

I have no better solution. UX/UI stuff is really hard, sometimes.
All I want is:

  • upload picture(s)
  • write title
  • write some context
  • check a preview
  • send

I'll update all the software and give it another try, when I am not outside in the rain and in a better mood and more patient.

TL;DR:

I suck at using Android (phone) apps.
I wanted Ecency to simplify the experience not make it more annoying than it already is on desktop.
I'll try again, because it still is the best option for mobile (?)

Sort:

Ecency is bad if you don't have the lastest version. It alway start to have new bugs if you aren't up to date.

About the dust votes, i agree. Would be cool to be able to sort notificafion more, like minimum reward for the vote to be notified.

There are some cool perks though, first it have the draft compatibilty. You start a post on your phone and finish it on your desktop. You can disable all the votes notification. Instead of swiping the notifcation just let them stay and after 16 notification they all just stake in one big notification. But yeah just disable the notification of votes if you don't want to see them.

As someone who use my phone a lot i have no trouble wrtiting on my phone and in this case writting in ecency isn't hard.

Yes sometime the app freez or crash, but as a daily user of ecency i gotta say it doesn't crash so much, about the wrong link oppening you are lucky cause when i click on comment notification it simply take 10 hours to open it haha.

But yes maybe a easyer app could be cool, but hive dapps try to look like social medias apps to bring new users

Thanks for making me feel like a boomer :P

Not my fault if you are old :3, just joking wrtiting on a keyboard is better anyway

People in the comments are also right that if you don't use the app on the latest version you can get a lot more bugs than usual. I've been using it for 7-8 months and I haven't had a single bug like you did.

I have the latest version installed and it works brilliantly for me and is the only choice for using Hive on mobile. I have posted articles from the App, but yeah, its not as comfortable as if you have a real keyboard and mouse of course, but I could use an existing template and post no problem. Using canva and creating a decent title photo on the other hand on mobile was not possible! lol

I hope you give it another go and can give us your feedback. For monitoring your Hive account and making comments etc, it works great imo.

Yeah, it could use some work. I tend to only use it for short replies or to read posts. Trying to write an actual post on it would be murder. I'd much rather have a full keyboard and suite of editing tools at my disposal.

I have never in all my time on Hive created a post anywhere except using Ecency app!

That's cool. You're evidence it works fine. I'm sure there are plenty of people on Hive who do it that way as well since mobile is becoming a much more common way of getting daily computing done.

Ah, but this is because you have tiny thin fingers. LoL ;p

Actually, it's because I have MS and and my left hand doesn't work. It's impossible to use a keyboard one handed, but one finger swiping on my mobile keyboard works OK!

It's all just a matter of practice! :)

Wow! That's impressive! I couldn't manage that speed with 2 hands!

I think it can get better, you're right, it might not be totally simplified but tech geeks will not have issues with navigating it. For me, I think it can get better, since they've got cool gamification system.

Do you get Pop Up notifications for new comments in ecency? Doesnt Work for me...

I use Ecency a lot and I do use my phone to write long posts. It’s a real challenge at times.
Thankfully I can save drafts. Mostly I use my iPad for the typing and my phone for photos.

The video uploads need to be fixed too.
