Chinatown Hustle

Writing, typing and even reading during car rides didn’t make me sick. I felt unwell at the sight of some camera holding techniques. Vertigo, among other things, came from the dizzying heights at which users held their devices above their heads, with one hand and no strap. My infirmity subsided as I kept my device close, observations closer and captured expression after expression, moment after moment.

Roguish Recon

In the spirit of Nimrod, the skillful hunter, I skulked along sidewalks. In pursuit of the portrait, I nearly erased my presence and swam through a sea of faces all beaming at the site of dancing dragons and lions. Along the way, I kept an eye out on my guide who gave us insight as to how the martial arts and dance groups coordinates their efforts. Much like the party coming together for our campaign, they relied on a leader, effective communication and simple hand signals. Photography normally would not take place so easily with so many interfering bodies in frame. Yet, the tools today cut away the excess by limiting my choices.

The Nifty Fifty

I contend this often, but it rung true as the firecrackers today. Other photogs today carried various equipment, so I mused that they must be pressed by the significant amount of choice they must make, with their zooming lenses. Of course, it may not be so, but consider this. With an option to shoot an any focal length between 24mm and 70mm, what was the “best” shot? Wide to narrow, 36 or 63, decisions, decisions. By contrast, with my one focal length, the 50mm, if I desired a more intimate shot, I must approach. If I sought a wide angle view, I would only step back. The preparation of my photo equipment let me decide at will when to shoot and what. The value of this amenity is priceless. The looks on the faces of some told me, their choices cost them a little extra.

The Way of Collections

A stack refers to the idea one puts things on top of each other, piling up like money or clothes. I want to collect a few things; tokens, magazines and namely images help create a different, not exactly bigger picture. Barry Schwartz already holds that bigger, or more, isn’t always better. My lens helps me reduce the extra in electing the best scenes. I collected many pictures today of people celebrating life and culture. One day, I hope to celebrate the culture I’ve created. Of creativity and collections, I still have more pieces to put together.

Post Summary

  • Some techniques didn’t look right, but got the job done. Crafting my own style always sets me right.
  • A skilled photographer capture scenes to tell a story, without placing themselves in the way of the events unfolding.
  • A fixed lens limits the decision-making process. I could argue it makes photography simpler, at least.
  • I don’t just take pictures to take them. The aim is to create a collection not only worth capturing, but especially worth sharing for posterity.
