America's "Free" Market: Washington's view on government protection of business

America is known for starting out devoted to the idea of economic freedom. But from the start, America imposed tariffs on foreign goods and tried to protect and help its home industries. All the help big business gets from our government started from the beginning.

But what about American presidents? Did they support the idea of free markets? Or the idea that government should help business? Over the next few weeks I'm going to look at how American presidents stood on these issues.

Here's what George Washington had to say on the matter:

"A free people ought not only to be armed, but disciplined; to which end a uniform and well-digested plan is requisite; and their safety and interest require that they should promote such manufactories as tend to render them independent of others for essential, particularly military, supplies."

I am so disillusioned! George Washington? Nothing is real now!
