Pathcutter: Nikola Tesla
Nikola Tesla.jpg
The legend of Nikola Tesla is shrouded in mystery, intrigue, innovation, and miracles. His impact can be felt modern day. A brilliant, visionary man whose ideas were so extraordinary such as transmitting free energy to power the lights of the whole world or creating “doomsday” weaponry to protect a country. Today we will go through 5 key features to further knowledge of his life, inventions, and legacy of being a pathcutter to a new paradigm of peace, innovation, and compassion.

Biography
Born July 10th, 1856 in Smilijan, Lika, located in current-day Croatia during a fierce electrical storm. His mother helped spur his innovative talents as she was an inventor (of household appliances). He graduated from Realschule, Karlovac in three years, instead of the traditional four years due to his eclectic memory. In 1875, he attended Austria Polytechnic in Austria but was kicked out due to gambling problems in his second year.
At the age of 26, he earned a job at a Budapest telegraph company in 1880 and after two promotions, left the company to work for the Continental Edison Company in Paris. After moving to New York in 1884 to work in Thomas Edison’s laboratory, Edison Machine Works, the two clashed with their ideologies and methods of producing electricity. Tesla quit Edison Machine Works in 1885 after Edison promised $50000 if he could improve Edison’s inefficient motors successfully (which he did). Edison responded that the challenge was American form of humor which caused Tesla to resign leading him to start his own laboratory a year later with the help of a few investors.
In the May of 1888, George Westinghouse, head of Westinghouse Electric Company, offered to buy his patents for one million dollars. Edison responded by putting on public shows of electrocuting live animals with AC. During this “War of Currents”, Tesla made a fantastical demonstration of AC current in 1893. The World’s Fair in the World’s Columbian Exposition, in Chicago was lit by AC generators which was one of the first grandeur light spectacles in history. Tesla earned a contract to develop the first hydroelectric generators at Niagara Falls which ended the War of Currents.
In 1893, a fire burned his laboratory and Tesla was devastated from the loss of his great assets.
Tesla developed a radio-controlled boat in 1898 which wowed spectators that saw the spectacle. Tesla met John Pierpoint Morgan who funded his idea of a global communication tower, but Tesla chose to transmit electrical signals on industrial levels. In 1901, the construction of Wardenclyffe Tower began. However, Morgan discovered Tesla’s plan and chose to fund a rival’s (Marconi) idea of using radio waves to communicate.
In 1904, the Us Patent Office reversed a previous decision and allowed Marconi to have a patent for his radio. One year, The AC patents expired which made Tesla broke. Marconi won the Nobel Prize and Tesla tried to bring a suit against him but had no funds to successfully follow through. Likewise, in 1906 he laid off the workers of Wardenclyffe due to no investors interested in Tesla’s experiment.
Tesla became a recluse later on in life, preferring the company of pigeons than humans, but still attended occasional, small dinner parties. During 1931, Tesla’s 75th birthday, he announced that he discovered a new source of power called “teleforce” that was composed of lightning which could protect countries from attacks. He tried selling this idea to England, Soviet Union, and the US. England almost bought the idea but the deal was ultimately scrapped.
During 1937, Westinghouse (remembering how Tesla helped the company beforehand) agreed to pay all of Tesla’s room and board for the rest of his years. Later during 1942, Tesla knew his death was imminent, prompting him to try to sell his “death beam” idea to the US government which led to a scheduled meeting but Tesla died before it could occur on January 7th, 1943
Following Tesla’s death, the FBI special agent P.E. Foxworth was called in to investigate whether he completed his famed “death ray”. The government seized everything since there was no will left behind. These papers were shipped to Dayton, Ohio at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base to find a way to defend the US from nuclear attacks. After 1952, Tesla’s papers were given back to the family.

Character and Culture
•Nikola Tesla, although brilliant, was not practical with his inventions, allowing others to profit off his own work. Tesla’s wealth was redirected into his experiments to help mankind have a little easier life. It is rumored that he shredded his royalty contract with Westinghouse (worth billions today), to save the company, although no official paperwork was ever filed.
•He remained a bachelor all of his life, preferring the company of his intentions and ideas.
•His vivid imagination started at an early age with him imaging a machine that would “run” on the Niagra Falls. Later, he developed the idea of the induction motor while on a stroll with a friend at the park and immediately began to describe the design by making pictures with a stick in the sand nearby.
•During the height of his wealth and fame, he wowed and entertained guests such as John Muir, Mark Twain, and Stanford White; the builder of WardenClyffe tower. He attended his extravagant dinner parties, dressed very carefully, always wearing white gloves and wearing a hat.

Inventions/Innovation
•The idea of a rotating magnetic field originated during his tenure with Budapest. This knowledge was the foundation of many of his future inventions including alternating current motor (AC).
•Tesla Coil is a machine that can amplify voltages frequencies to high frequencies and high voltage which is essentially radio waves.
•X-Ray machines along with the remote control are popularly used concepts today.
•Possible inventions include a “death wall” capable of melting enemy aircraft, a “death beam” that was capable of destroying anything within 200 miles if it, and an oscillation machine that could “simulate an earthquake”. Free energy, flying saucers, and electricity powered airships are among his fabled ideas that did not grow to fruition.
•In 1890 he transmitted energy through the air for the first time which is recorded as the first use of wireless transmission

Legacy
•Still use AC current to power our homes today!
•Inspired thousands of innovative minds to join newly created fields in electricity, magnetism, and radio.
•Tesla wanted to be remembered as the man who “ended war”. Although this did not pan out, his path has led many to the realization that free energy may be possible and inspiring thousands of innovators to create the technology to harness it.
•HAARP is known to send huge amounts of radio waves into the ionosphere in attempt to provide electricity and to impact weather, very similar to the original idea as Tesla’s.

Tidbits
•During his trip to New York, he lost all of his money and almost lost his life due to a mutiny that occurred on the trip.
•The reason AC current was more efficient due to the ability to raise and lower voltage across great distances, while DC current would need a power station every mile to be able to carry across enough voltage.
•Tesla had many phobias including germs, shaking hands, and touching hair.
•Tesla believed the universe was composed of many waves and vibrations.
•Later in life, Tesla grew a deep appreciation for Eastern/Hindu philosophy.
•Tesla reported that Martians sent him a message that said “one… two… three.” However, it is widely believed he was just receiving radio waves from space.
