Life has been brought to a standstill and changed by a very small virus, but which is having an enormous impact on the world.

Almost every country is currently or have been in lockdown. Schools have been closed all over the world. There are some schools where teachers are working very hard so that kids can still learn. This is where technology is available to teachers and kids. This is the lucky kids but that is not a reality for many kids and school systems. This pandemic has brought into focus, how some have been left behind.

This has shown the importance of teachers, and how they can succeed in a crisis with the right technology and support system.

While many school systems and teachers are trying to engage students, they face at least three serious bottlenecks: (1) stress due to economic uncertainty, concern for the safety of loved ones, and anxiety about the future;
(2) the daunting challenge of returning to schools where many students have dropped out or fallen behind ― and increased pressure on teachers to ensure catch-up with little professional development support; and
(3) little access to the right technologies or the skills to use them (some schools gives all teachers and students ipads with a host of learning material pre-loaded).

A new World Bank note outlines three key principles to strengthen teacher effectiveness during and in the immediate aftermath of the pandemic, as well as opportunities for long-run improvement:

Principle 1: Ensure Teacher effectiveness by supporting Teacher Resilience.

Teachers jobs and salaries should be protected in order to ensure a motivated and ready workforce to get students back on track when schools reopen.
Teachers should have access to counseling that can support teacher well-being during this pandemic.

Principle 2: Ensure Teacher Effectiveness by supporting Teachers Instructionally.

Teachers should be able to assess students that came back to school so that it can be identified what skills, and key content has been lost and need to be learned again.
Teachers should also be on the lookout for warning signs of dropping out.
Teachers should receive professional development support to effectively undertake remedial education.
Teachers will also need professional development support to undertake effective remedial education.

Principle 3: Ensure Teacher Effectiveness by supporting Teachers Technologically.

Countries and schools that have been more successful, have insured that their teachers have access to technology.

As schools closed in the Kyrgyz Republic, for instance, teachers were provided free SIM cards to access educational material online and WhatsApp.
Providing technology is but only one side of the coin teachers must also be able to use technology correctly and effectively.
In Lebanon, the Ministry has been training teachers to record and upload documents and hold virtual classes effectively.

Every teacher will approach technology differently. Support must be provided with diverse strategies. This will be part of the new normal whereby technology should be integrated into teaching processes.

In all countries and schools strong leadership will be the key for the post Covid19 phase. Countries will need to provide the necessary financing to strengthen quality and equity in schools.

Let all of us do our utmost best to support teachers and students in this very difficult, changing, and uncertain situation.

I do admire teachers. After going through the lockdowns of different types, the students of the year 2020 will forever be changed. I hope both students and teachers will be able to overcome the difficulties of this year. They have my support.

Thank you for reading. Yes, this is definitely the biggest challenge ever for teachers.
Thank you for the support.

My wife is a teacher at a special school, but most of the children does not have access to the necessary technology to enable proper distance teaching!!

Good to hear from you. That is a shame, and I think that is the reality in the majority of schools in South Africa.
Blessings for the week.
