Oops.. I messed up.

Yeah, oops. I went and made a mistake and let a secret slip... I translated from English to Finnish. You might be thinking "Hey, smallsteps, that is great, not a mistake", but you are wrong. Now mummy and daddy know that I can do this.

And it gets worse, much worse. What I translated was 'Don't touch' into Finnish. Now I have no excuse not to touch things.. I can no longer pretend I didn't understand and now it becomes, actively ignoring. I think this means the punishment changes.

It is interesting though how many people seem to think that learning two languages is somehow stressful for a child but, those that are against it likely didn't experience it themselves. For me, I think it is pretty cool that I am able to understand what everyone is saying at all times.

I heard a story of my cousin, who is also dual mother tongue, crying when young because she heard her mother speaking in a way that she didn't understand what was going on. Perhaps she thought her mother was possessed by the devil but no, she was just speaking Swedish.

Anyway, the secret is out, mummy and daddy know I understand them both when they say, "Don't touch that Smallsteps!!" I feel a bit sorry for them having to face the reality that I am going to actively ignore them a lot. There are just too many interesting things to explore...

Wow, Smallsteps, your mommy, and daddy must be very very proud of you! I am.

Don't worry about your secret to be out, there is plenty of other things you can still pretend not to understand. :D My son is also bilingual and I can see he understands both languages. Sometimes selectively ;)

I think it is a leg up in the world and gives a slightly different perspective than most others.

It certainly does!

That is excellent news!😋 You seem to be a very smart and intelligent little person. ❤️✨ Your friend Baby Sulimur is also bilingual, but she hasn’t shown yet understanding for word “no”...this made me think, maybe she’s also just fooling us, pretending not to understand. 🤣👌🏽✨

It isn't my place to give away her secrets but most likely, she is fooling you and laughs herself to sleep each night thinking about it...

I agree 🤣

Haha,

I feel a bit sorry for them having to face the reality that I am going to actively ignore them a lot.

I love it. These posts are fun. Thanks for sharing your thoughts and insights. We tried teaching our girls Macedonian, but I don't speak any and it is a second language for my wife. We got a few dozen words that they'll use occasionally.

Even a few words containing the right sounds can be helpful for learning later if they want.

That's a great point!

Daddy is a language trainer.

That's gonna help for sure. I'm grateful that my kids regularly interact with their maternal grandparents. They are immigrants from Macedonia and regularly talk to the kids in mixed-speech.

You’re so adorable <3, your smily face made me smile for a moment . Keep it up xx

Besides being very cute and smiling, she is intelligent, God take care of her.
