An Introduction to humanity

in #efed-rplast month

A cheap down and dirty scent of booze hung in the air. Mingling in with this scent was the telltale aroma of what The Sphinx had learned was drug taking. Sometimes this meant Cigarettes, other times it was injected into veins. The method of delivery didn’t change anything aside from the scent left behind. A flash of darkening aggression appeared on his narrow facial features.

Today The Sphinx had chosen to dress in an obsidian dark suit, tailored and classic. By his side as always, was Dollia Trypp. Dollia’s style of dress mirrored The Sphinxes' own in that she tended to wear dresses in the colour scheme he had chosen as his aesthetic. Namely black and other times shades of grey. Her lips turned in a smile as she began to speak.

“Take a look around, what do you see? What do you hear? What can you sense?” softly spoken questions hung in the air.

A slow breath was released, a measured and controlled response despite the aggression that filled out The Sphinxes form.

“What do I see? I see filth, weakness, rot. I hear the sounds of drinks being poured, heartbeats, racing pulses, conversations. I can sense a great deal of fragility inside the bodies of these beings.”

Sharply spoken words, The Sphinxes voice was cold and cutting like a fearsome blade. Not that such a reaction was surprising given his thoughts on what he would soon learn was called humanity.

“Correct, there is much fragility in the bodies of humans. You’ve been awake for a few days in this form? And in that time you’ve been focused solely on adapting to the modern world in which you’ve woken up to. Aside from me, you haven’t really communicated with a human have you?” Dollia asked, though she already knew the answer.

“I have not spoken to any human outside of you that much is true. I didn’t see a need to lower myself to speak to the dregs of humanity. What would be the point? What could I possibly learn from such weak willed individuals”.

Dollia’s slender fingers reached out and drummed along the solid oak surface of the bar counter that was enclosed at the very back of the room. Tapping out an almost musical pattern she began to speak.

“I didn’t bring you here to speak to humanity, I brought you here to guide you down the path to learning how to blend in with humanity. In this modern age people have forgotten the old ways, they no longer revere the entities from the time in which you call home. I’m not saying you have to compromise who you are, all I’m suggesting is that perhaps there is a way to unify both halves of who you are. The Sphinx and Drake Nygma.”

A thoughtful and curious silence unfolded for what felt like an eternity. Two glasses of finely aged single malt whiskey were placed upon the counter.

Reaching out with one solid hand, Drake lifted the glass to his mouth, letting the liquid coat the inside of his throat. On the surface it would appear as though Drake was a single entity. To the eyes of the drunken, high and unintelligent patrons of this bar they would be none the wiser as to the supernatural presence that walked among them.

Dollia’s lips turned in a faint smirk, her mind full of ancient knowledge, the heritage of the being that stood across from her was lingering in her mind. For just a moment as Dollia looked upon The Sphinx she thought that she could see a flicker of how had he looked so very long ago.

To her eyes The Sphinx appeared clad in a simple white robe, runic looking symbols marking the breadth of the robe. One symbol was of the lion, the other was of a golden staff. A memory flashed through her mind, leaving her speechless for a single moment in time.

Taking a slow measured breath she began to speak.

“They used to say that The Sphinx was the protector of Egypt, that he would devour those who got his riddles wrong. There is a certain parallel to how you act now in the present day. You vanquish those who stand against you. And yet…. I wonder if somewhere in the mind you share with Drake Nygma, does the instinct to protect yet remain?”.

Dollia’s question lay hanging in the air, her brows drawn together as she pondered this thought.

“Perhaps what you say is true, perhaps buried somewhere deep down is an instinct to protect. Or perhaps the simple truth is I’ve yet to learn all that I am, all that I was. All that matters for now is that I continue to conquer and win the battles that are placed at our doorstep.”

The smirk on Dollia’s face grew bigger, bolder upon hearing these neatly spoken words.

“You speak calmly, with attention paid to form and order. The poise and clarity with which you speak is rarely seen anymore. It’s refreshing to see that a master orator still lives in this modern day.”

The Sphinxes lips turned in a charismatic smirk, a gleam in the depth of his brilliant eyes. His posture spoke of confidence, a deep understanding of words and what they meant.

“I’ve had time to consider the words I use, to develop a true understanding of what they all mean. I am both a brutal warrior and a gentleman. This duality that exists is what makes me so complex.”

Dollia was left speechless, her mind spinning at the words that surged throughout the air.

“Let us leave Sphinx, we have much research to do, I believe that the time is nigh to explore the possibilities of who you might have been once upon a time.”

Exactly three minutes later, timed down to the second both Dolllia and The Sphinx exited the filthy, unwashed bar for a new location.

A faint image of a room laden with artifacts. Various ancient statues and what looked to be a map of the stars lay open on a desk that could very easily have come from the office of a scholar or perhaps a professor.

“Jeremiah Vastrix…. I’ll see you soon…. Make ready for war….”

Eerie and chaotic laughter hummed through the air as the camera faded to black.
