After decades of exhausting work, with little hope of success, quantum mechanics suddenly developed a feverish activity. Almost two years ago, IBM showed the world a quantum computer with five quantum bits (qubits), which they now (which sounds a bit strange) are called IBM Q Experience. Then the device was more like a toy for researchers than a means for serious data processing. However, the project registered 70,000 users around the world, and by now the number of qubits has quadrupled. One year ago, IBM and Intel announced the creation of quantum computers for 50 and 49 qubits.
Currently, there is the talk of impending "quantum superiority": the time when a quantum computer can perform a task beyond the power of even the most powerful classical supercomputers. If we compare only numbers, then such a statement may seem ridiculous: 50 qubits against billions of classic bits in any laptop. But the whole point of quantum computing lies in the fact that the quantum bit is capable of much more than the classical one. For a long time, it was believed that 50 qubits would be enough to carry out calculations that a normal computer would perform indefinitely.
I'd like to draw a conclusion that all the main problems are solved and the future, in which quantum computers - a phenomenon ubiquitous, it's just a matter of technical equipment. But it will be wrong. The physical issues at the heart of quantum computing are still far from being solved. Even if we soon step into the era of quantum supremacy, the next year or two may prove decisive - do quantum computers completely change the approach to computation? The stakes are still high, and there is no guarantee that the goal will be achieved.
At the heart of the calculations of quantum computers are not bits encoding 1 and 0, and qubits are special logical elements, because of quantum properties capable of encoding and 0, 1 and 0 and 1 together. In theory, this will allow quantum machines to become much more productive than conventional computers - right up to the possibility of hacking blockage.
IBM recognizes that the company has not yet succeeded in creating an ideal and versatile quantum computer, but developers have managed to build 20-qubit and 50-qubit computers with low errors, suitable for solving some research problems.
Later, in 2017, IBM announced a paid service for quantum computing IBM Q and now announced that it will soon launch it for a 20-qubit computer, and updated the SDK. When the service will be available 50-qubit computers, it is unknown. IBM Research top manager Dario Gil said in a conversation with the publication that the company understands that the emergence of quantum computers can make modern encryption methods useless, so IBM is already working on "post-quantum" cryptography algorithms.
