Why Mechanical Engineering?
At the age when kids play with toys and dolls I use to get along with my dad and play with Electronic parts like electric motors, gear tooth from tape recorder, batteries, and bulbs etc..i also did a lot of damage to the household electronics out of curiosity of how it works. At the age ten, building my science projects was never a challenge in primary school it was more like a hubby. I was certain that I wanted to be a mechanic, but I grew much older and was able to define what really I wanted to study. A mechanical engineer it is.

Mechanical Engineering is one of the most rapidly growing industries in the world today. It has also become one of the most widely studied and widely available college courses, with thousands of students in Nigeria choosing to study it upon leaving high school. However, many Mechanical Engineering students drop out of college before the end of their first year. The reason? They don't really know what mechanical engineering is when they apply to study it.

What is Mechanical Engineering?

Mechanical engineering is the discipline that applies the principles of engineering, physics, and materials science for the design, analysis, manufacturing, and maintenance of mechanical systems. It is the branch of engineering that involves the design, production, and operation of machinery.

The role of mechanical engineering in any developing country

Mechanical engineering is one of the most crucial industries if we are to continue living in the fashion in which we live. When the mechanical age entered fully , thousands of workers were forced out of work in favour of machines like lathes which were quicker at their jobs and didn't bother managers with so many requests for a lunch break and sick leaves. For some time, those who once earned a living in the factories like first aluminium Nigeria limited and the likes were unemployed confused; but then one day, a lathe machine broke down. It was soon realized that each organization with mechanical workers would suffer financially if the powerful machines had to go two to three days operational down time; and so, work was created. Former factory workers were retrained as mechanical engineers and put to work repairing, monitoring and maintaining the machines which took their jobs and forced them into poverty. It was not long before a guy could make a very healthy living as a mechanical engineer. As of today Nigeria can boast of made in Nigeria vehicles, manufactured by INNOSONS Motors…..This is a major achievement and hundreds of mechanical engineers have being employed alongside technicians of various disciplines….this will definitely have a reflection on the Nigerian economy.

Why you should study mechanical engineering?

Career Opportunities

Mechanical engineering graduates are sought by employers in almost all sectors of the engineering industry. These include:
Applied mechanics
Fluid engineering
Heat transfer
Energy conversion
Internal combustion engine
Power engineering
Ocean,offshore & arctic engineering

Study Point Of View

What you study in 5 years of mechanical engineering?
It is same as you study in O-level physics. It same you see around cars, motions, movements, boiling etc....., you can see and feel what you study in your subject......So you get theory and practical in hands with each other. It has more numerical, so you have more score in your exam same as mathematics.
So it easy and more fruitful than any other engineering in my view. You have not to do struggle to complete your engineering as you got both theory and practical at same place.......

Mechanical Engineers Have Good Graduate Prospects

In a rigorus tough graduate job market it’s fair to say that degree-level engineers have an edge. Engineers build societies and, mechanical engineers specifically, apply fundamental mathematics and physics laws to create and build mechanical devices we use every day.mechanical engineers have good graduate prospects.this is because:-

Mechanical Engineers Are Multi-Skilled

One might refer to a qualified mechanical engineer as a jack-of-all-trades, and those in the engineering sector often do. Mechanical engineers have a working knowledge of computer applications, electricity, structures, mathematics, and physics, plus they’re required to have some understanding of social, environmental, and economic factors. If a technical degree incorporating a broader understanding of the world sounds interesting, mechanical engineering is the path to make it a reality.

Mechanical Engineers Are At the Forefront of Future Technologies

Mechanical engineering is at the forefront of developing new technologies for a number of industries including transport, healthcare, construction, and robotics. What an exciting time to be alive and what an exciting time to be a mechanical engineer.

Challenges Hindering Breakthrough of mechanical engineers in Nigeria.

Under-Utilization of Resources

Inefficient use of available human, financial and material resources. Human resources here refers to mechanical Engineers. The resulting economy is one with low human capacity building, absence of good an safe infrastructure and epileptic power supply amongst others. The resulting consequence is unemployment, poverty, under-development and increase in crime. This epileptic power supply made a well know tube and tyre manufacturer Mechellin Nigeria limited to park out of Nigeria.

Lack of appreciation

Lack of appreciation of the role of mechanical engineering development technologies in the national development by policy makers and the general public as we are viewed to be inferior to foreign technologies.

Communication Skills

Along with large project management, mechanical engineers also face the challenge of communicating their ideas clearly in meetings as well as when they are overseeing projects in the field. In these situations, being able to communicate complex engineering concepts and ideas can be difficult, so it’s important for mechanical engineers to remember that in many cases they may be discussing plans with individuals who know far less about engineering than themselves. Therefore, they should know how to explain project details in an easy-to-understand manner.

Continuing Education

Due to the field of mechanical engineering constantly changing, engineers are always faced with needing to keep their education up-to-date. Since most engineers in the field have specialized in such areas as civil or petroleum engineering in addition to mechanical engineering, the requirements needed to stay up to date of the latest technology are becoming more time taking and challenging. For example, since 3D modeling and design is one of the most important technological advances now used to design and construction, mechanical engineers often find themselves in classes and seminars to learn a new CAD software or just another DATA ANALYSIS TOOL.

NB-Mechanical Engineers have to be at every decision table as long as economical development is the target of every nation.
