Os montados formam paisagens culturais, sistemas que resultaram da ação humana por aproveitamento de recursos diversos: a cortiça, os frutos para alimentação animal, as pastagens ou as culturas agrícolas. Segundo a WWF - World Wild Fund for Nature, mais de cem mil pessoas no sul da Europa e no norte de África dependem direta e indiretamente destas florestas.
