Introducing the Steem ENS service - Learn how to get your Steem-branded ENS name!

ENS or Ethereum Name Service is a growing phenomenon in the Ethereum community. You might already know that ENS is most useful in providing a short and elegant name for your long and gibberish ethereum address. However, do you also know that ENS can actually support addresses for other cryptocurrencies as well? On top of that, ENS can also be used as a naming service for websites, Tor .onion sites and text records. For more info, you can refer to this blog post.

What is Steem ENS?

@steem.ens is here with the objective to provide Steem-branded ENS names for fellow Steemians. Any Steemian can lease a ENS name by just delegating 150 SP to the @steem.ens account. Every 150 SP delegated entitles you to 1 ENS sub-name. For example culgin.steemleo.eth, a sub-name of steemleo.eth, currently resolves to 0xcfa69328a74c0eac388b889c21eb3ddd9d41a025.

As long as the SP delegation is still active, your sub-name will remain active.

Why use Steem ENS?

To overcome the barrier of entry

Ethereum is an entirely different realm versus Steem. While many Steemians are familiar with Steem, not all of us know how to operate in the Ethereum environment. Furthermore, even though it is easy to get an Ethereum address, it is not so straightforward to buy ETH depending on which country you are from. Getting your own ENS requires ETH. If you have a ETH address but do not own ETH, it probably does not make sense for you to purchase ETH just to get ENS.

Cost-savings

Getting a ENS name costs at least $5 per year if you are getting it from ENS App directly. However, you will need to pay the cost in ETH. If you want to get one with credit card, you can do so via NameStack, but that will cost you $6.99 per year. Hence, if you just want to experiment to see whether ENS suits you, then you should give Steem ENS service a try.

Enhance your social image in the crypto-space

If you are active on Steem, you probably are a budding social influencer. Many of us blogs about cryptocurrencies and decentralization etc. Therefore an ENS name is a cool thing to have as it shows that you have skin in the game. There are several prominent figures in the crypto-space who are already using ENS.

For example, Vitalik Buterin,

Vitalik Twitter

Ryan Sean Adams,

Ryan Sean Adams Twitter

And closer to us, @scottcbusiness

Scott Cunningham Twitter

Having a simple ENS name also helps you get tips in ETH easier. You never know when someone will drop you some ETH to appreciate your cool content.

Support your favorite Steem-based project

By having a Steem-branded .eth address as your Twitter profile name also has an added effect of promoting Steem. Imagine having steempeak.eth name as your Twitter profile, naturally people who see it might get curious what Steempeak is about.

In addition, the @steem.ens account will also be used to upvote content created by Steem-based projects. The amount of upvote is dependent on the number of Steemians with the related ENS name. For example, if more Steemians are using steemleo.eth, then content from @steem.leo will get more upvotes from the @steem.ens account. More details will be provided later.

What are the available domains?

The following domains are current available. And I will consider adding more if there are sufficient interest.

  • steemnetwork.eth
  • steempeak.eth
  • steemleo.eth
  • 3speak.eth
  • splinterlands.eth
  • palnet.eth
  • neoxian.eth
  • appics.eth
  • steemcoinpan.eth
  • sportstalk.eth
  • actifit.eth
  • esteem.eth
  • dlike.eth
  • tasteem.eth
  • stemgeeks.eth
  • photostream.eth
  • steemace.eth
  • battlegames.eth
  • sonicgroove.eth
  • vimmtv.eth
  • travelfeed.eth
  • reggaesteem.eth
  • clicktrackprofit.eth
  • upfundme.eth

How to get started?

Step 1

Step 2

  • Once Step 1 is done, send @steem.ens a memo with the intended ENS sub-name and the Ethereum address to link to. For example,
    image.png

Step 3

  • Wait for me to provision the name and send you back a memo to update you on the status. As I am doing all these manually, do allow me up to 3 days to complete your request.

Step 4

  • You can then go check if it has been mapped to the right address via EtherScan. The @steem.ens account will also post regular updates on new names that are added.

I have to admit that I am running this service manually right now. So it is best if you can join the Discord server in case you encounter any issues. Looking forward to your support and shoot any questions you may have.

Welcome on Steemit @steem.ens and your introduction.

You've mentioned "culgin.steemleo.eth". Is it somehow related to user @culgin? Just wondering - it happened that I know this user pretty well and you got me curious.

I also must admit, that this post has been just a bit difficult to digest. Perhaps to many informations packed in one post - it's very difficult right now to summarize it and answer simple question 'what did I just read?'.

ps. I've noticed, that you're following our experimental curation trail (ph-fund). would you mind sharing with me how did you find out about this particulat trial? Do we have some common friends?

Upvote on the way :)
Yours, Piotr

Steem ENS is my little project 😅

culgin - this is fantastic, I am just finding this - we are interested in upfundme.eth or even a steemit or unbranded steem.eth. Steempeak promising from that list....

@ecoinstant, thanks for the interest :)

I have upfundme.eth added onto the list. So you can request for your upfundme.eth branded ENS name if you like.

Cheers!

I will be getting mine soon, also presenting this idea to a few partner projects!

Thank you! 😉

I have just delegated 150SP for a personal address, will be sending the memo shortly.

One question if you don't mind - what will you be doing with the voting power? I run a partner fund and am always looking for win-win type networking.

Edit - I reread the part about voting - very interested! I will join your discord and see if I can't interview you further!

I just read your reply @culgin

Lovely. I will definetly give more attention to it since I know that you're behind ENS.

At the moment I feel quite silly - because I still don't know what ENS is about, what's this token economy and how does it plan to grow it's value.

Cheers
Piotr

There is no token my friend @crypto.piotr. The economy is simple. Do you have a Ethereum address that looks like this?

0xCfa69328A74C0eAc388B889c21eB3ddd9d41a025

Now you can turn that into this,

culgin.steemleo.eth

Pretty neat right? This is the service ENS is providing. No over-selling no mis-marketing.

This seems pretty cool.

Mind some rapid fire questions?

  • Do you only vote on one project's post a day? If so, how do you choose who to vote for? If not, how do you ensure your VP stays high enough?
  • What if no projects are posting anything, any plans on what to do with your unused VP?
  • How is this more beneficial than delegating to a project directly?
  • How do you plan to stay financial stable? $5 a year per domain, but you're only getting delegations, how do you make money?
  • Can one person delegate in multiples of 150SP to vote for more than one project?

Thanks, hope I didn't bombard you too bad with those :^)

Hey there, good questions and sorry for the slow response! Let me try to answer 1 by 1.

  • Do you only vote on one project's post a day? If so, how do you choose who to vote for? If not, how do you ensure your VP stays high enough?

Yes, that is the intention. You can refer to this latest post on how the vote will be allocated. At this stage I am using SteemVoter to cast votes for projects. I am using SteemAuto to follow curation trails so that I can utilize the unused VP. However, I will stop voting when @steem.ens VP is at 85%. This means that there should be enough VP to support the respective projects. This setup will probably need some adjustment once there are more projects onboard, but for now, it should suffice.

  • What if no projects are posting anything, any plans on what to do with your unused VP?

Answered above.

  • How is this more beneficial than delegating to a project directly?

If you just want to support a project, then you should just delegate to the project directly. @steem.ens service's is aimed to lease ENS to Steemians. So you should use this if you want an ENS but do not want to spend ETH to get one. It is just an additional benefit that you also get to support your favorite project at the same time.

  • How do you plan to stay financial stable? $5 a year per domain, but you're only getting delegations, how do you make money?

Frankly, I do not have much hope to make a profit. It is really more of a service that I provide to Steemian. In the ideal situation, I should be able to get enough curation rewards to offset the cost. Curation rewards is roughly ~8% yield at this point. I bought 24 ENS domains for this so far, which is $120/year. This means that I will need $1500 worth of effective SP to breakeven. So it is pretty much a long shot :)

  • Can one person delegate in multiples of 150SP to vote for more than one project?

Yes! I will be announcing this pretty soon. Basically @steem.ens will allow ENS sponsoring. For example, if I delegated 300 SP to @steem.ens, I will be able to get 1 ENS name of my choice and sponsor another Steemian an ENS.

Thanks for the answers! Looking forward to seeing how this all develops, I'll keep your project close in mind for the future :^)
