On how my Pomelo's grant from Season 2 evolved.

in #eos2 years ago (edited)

During Pomelo's Season 2, I proposed a grant to create a system aimed at empowering local communities by leveraging the capabilities of the EOS network. The proposed system was thought to operate under the dynamics of a traditional L.E.T.S. A detailed explanation plus references was attached to the grant.

The grant raised 125 USD that were additionally matched with a generous donation from the ENF. The whole information regarding that 2nd season grant can be found here.

As I aimed to move forward with the development of the proposed project. Three factors became apparent: First, the proceeds weren't sufficient to cover more than a few days of man hours of work. Second, there were already within the EOS community several initiatives and proponents that also aimed at the benefit of local communities. The most consolidated of these initiatives: Eden, was slowly but constantly making progress. Then, third, I discovered that Eden's evolution, Eden-Fractal, is a generalization of the original L.E.T.S idea I was trying to implement.

Rather than starting a new one man project, with all the limitations that such a strategy would bring, I decided that it was better to push these already existing initiatives forward. Such a move would constitute a mutual benefit because these projects provide valuable infrastructure such as communication channels, existing set of members and preliminary protocols, schedules and many other desirable characteristics. Also, by their very nature, these initiatives were plagued by lack of efficient participation, excessive noise at every level, incipient attempts at optimization and many other challenges inherent to self-bootstrapping endeavors in which I could handsomely contribute.

So, I set myself to the task of understanding and helping to tune these nascent protocols. As a result, I've participated in most Eden-Fractal and Genesis-Fractal meetings. In both cases I've been consistently ranked as a respectable contributor. The majority of my contributions have dealt with long term protocol flaws identification and protocol optimization.

Both, in order to organize my ideas and to provide proof of my contributions, I created a series of blog-posts that, through charts, thought experiments, logic and some research aim to present the community with possible routes for optimization, improvement, potential attack vectors and many other valuable ideas. The complete list of blog posts is as follows:

  • On passive income and value discovery on fractal democracy systems. (found here)
  • On possible attack vectors on fractal democracy. (found here)
  • On self ranking on fractal democracy. (found here)
  • Towards a statistical simulation of fractal democracy. (found here)
  • On Luna and fractal democracy. (found here)

In addition, proof of my contributing participation in Eden-Fractal and Genesis-Fractal meetings can be found in the corresponding YouTube channels. (Here and here respectively)

What's next?

My research led me to identify several important factors which are probably ubiquitous to decentralized governance systems:

  • The pervasive presence of noise at almost every imaginable level: from communications, to decision making, to new members induction, etc.
  • The urgent need the community has of improved self-awareness. If I were to compare these communities with some intelligent entity, I would say they are in the pre-conscious state. That is, they are intelligent but not fully conscious of themselves and their power as a unit.
  • Related to this, the need these communities have for effective feedback systems that allow for rapid identification of newly attempted moves/changes.
  • The observation that such systems, if implemented, reduce naturally the need for managerial protocols. Instead, the community would tend towards organic self-management.
  • The observation that there exist already at least one super successful company that exhibits many (although not all) of these characteristics. That company is Tesla Inc.
  • The understanding that the above points can be interlinked effectively: Community's self-awareness and noise reduction can be improved by focusing efforts on the development of feedback mechanisms that lead to faster achievement of consensus. That's exactly a fundamental part of the Tesla model.

So, in my Season 3 grant, I will be aiming at creating one of such feedback systems. In the case of Tesla, every employee has several dozen apps at his disposition. These apps allow him to assess the state of the company and his whereabouts within it. This information in turn serves as a guide for that employee on how to best invest his efforts with almost no need of managerial monitoring. From my perspective, that's exactly what decentralized communities need in order to blossom.

And that's pretty much it in regards to my accountability of the funds I was trusted with by EOS community members and the ENF.

Especial thanks to all my donors from Season 2. In particular to Lennie, EosMicroloan, asusx5msrosh, nickandnight and others.
