How to Generate an EOS private/public key pair

This post is intended to help you securely generate an EOS private / public key pair for the EOS ERC20 registration process. For the most secure method, you should do this on a brand new computer that you do not need to use again until after June. It is crucial that you do your own research to verify that this registration process is correct. This post is for informational purposes only and does not constitute investment advice.

This may seem like a lot of steps, but it’s actually quite straightforward.

Requirements

  1. (Optional) A computer you can keep off and disconnected from the internet from now until the mainnet launches in June.
  2. An internet connection.
  3. Access to the Ethereum wallet that holds your EOS ERC20 tokens.

Securely Generating your Key Pair

  • Go to the official eos.io website
  • Scroll down and click “Get EOS”
  • Under “Participation Instructions” click the “Register” tab
  • Scroll down slightly and click “MyEtherWallet”
  • You will now see a button that says “GENERATE EOS KEYS”, but don’t click it yet.
  • IMPORTANT: Turn off the WiFi on your computer so that your computer is offline.
  • Click the “GENERATE EOS KEYS” button.
  • You will now see your EOS public / private key pair on the website. Because your machine is not connected to the internet, you can greatly reduce the risk of someone intercepting your key pair.
  • Securely backup your public / private key pair in a safe location. It is important that you don’t store it on a computer that is connected to the internet or in a place that someone else could access it.
  • (Optional) Do not turn your WiFi back on until after the mainnet launches and you have claimed your EOS tokens.

Linking your Key Pair to your Ethereum address

  • Go to MyEtherWallet or MyCrypto
  • Click on “Contracts” at the top of the page
  • Choose “EOS – Contribution” from the contract dropdown
  • Click ‘'Access”
  • Select “Register” from the function dropdown
  • Enter your EOS public key in the “key” field (Never enter your private key.)
  • Unlock your wallet
  • Click “Write”
  • Make sure “Amount” is set to “0”
  • Click “Generate Transaction”
  • Approve the transaction from your wallet and make sure it confirms on the Ethereum network

Verifying Your Registration

  • Go to MyEtherWallet or MyCrypto
  • Click on “Contracts” at the top of the page
  • Choose “EOS – Contribution” from the contract dropdown
  • Click ‘'Access”
  • Choose “keys” from the function dropdown
  • Enter your Ethereum public address in the “address” field (Never enter your private key.)
  • Click “Read”
  • Your registered EOS public address will be displayed in the “string” field. Verify that it matches the EOS public address you generated in the previous steps, and you’re good to go!
