This ritual is pretty safe as it is a archangel with little or no negatives.
But this is just to be safe rather then sorry when it comes to this type of working.
Some symptoms of negative psychic attacks are
Negative things that will happen in your life after you do a ritual.
Headaches. Stomachaches. Feeling disconnected from your life. Nausea
Anxiety, Depression, Bursts of Anger or a quick switch of mood.
Techniques for protection
You can do these in any way or just one of them or all of them.
Meditation
A good thing to do is a chakra cleanse meditation kundalini or something that is very focused on meditation.
Meditation is good to get your mind into the whole focusing on what you are doing at the present current time.
No extra thoughts! It also brings a little bit of energy into you or a lot of it with how you choose to do the meditation.
Lesser banishing ritual of the pentagram.
Invoking is bringing in Banishing is getting rid of.
The lesser banishing of the pentagram is a little ritual you can do in 5-10 minutes to banish any negative energy around you. Think of it as a shield around you that you do not see.
It is cool if you create a altar or even visualize it within your head. This is based off of the Microcosm which is tiny and around you. Think of your room.

Lesser Banishing Ritual of the Hexagram
The same as the Lesser banishing ritual of the pentagram but it is on the macrocosm side of things. With the protection going far. More along a planetary scale.

There is greater rituals for both of these and they provide better protection I will go into them at a later date when we choose to dabble in something needed for more protection. You can also do the opposite and bring energy into you. If you would want you can do those as well. I think for this ritual the best that we can do is the air element of each ritual because you always see an angel in the air!
Rose Cross ritual.
The pentagram and hexagram bring entities of the astral upon you. The Rose Cross is the final icing on the cake for protection. It brings the area that you are in to a complete peace. It brings more of the focus on the astral instead of it being physical.
This ritual is much different then the others and it might take some practice to get used to.

There is a lot of different things you can choose that would be considered as this.

This is you saying that no entity will cause you to do any thing malicious. That you have control of yourself and that is it. It can be a short prayer or even a meditation. You can combine all of the above with this tactic.

I personally like to do the LBRP before and after every ritual and I actually do banishings on a daily basis as well.
I like to bring energy in and bring it out. Sometimes its better to banish banish banish and other times it is better to draaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaawwwwwwwwww it in. I am with you on what you do I do the same!
Sometimes I get overwhelmed from too much energy. I'm a mess.
