<당신은 길 잃은 신이다> - 서창덕 지음
이 책은 부산 금정산 유명 사찰 범어사에 속해있는 작은 청련암의 벽화에 대한 이야기다. 어느 사찰에서도 볼 수 없는 특이한 벽화에 대한 뜻을 저자가 찾아 나서는 이야기다. 삶, 깨달음, 명상 등의 이야기가 벽화에 은유적으로 표현되어 있었다.
며칠 전 종로도서관에 볼 책을 골라 나오던 중 새로 나온 책 코너에서 손에 잡혀 함께 대출한 책이다. 책 제목에 흥미가 생겨 별 뜻 없이 고른 책인데 단숨에 읽어 내려가 하루를 넘기지 않고 다 봤다.
꽤 오래전 친한 형 아버지의 부고 소식에 부산으로 달려간 적이 있다. 2박 3일 시간을 함께 나누고 발인 날 화장장에서 조용히 나왔다. 큰길가로 나와보니 전철역은 범어사역이었다. 매우 피곤한 몸인데 호기심이었을까 산 중턱에 있는 범어사로 향했다. 초행길이라 입구를 못 찾아 헤매다 분위기가 묘한 오솔길에 들어섰다. 그때 기분엔 마치 삶과 죽음이 함께 있는 곳이란 생각이 들었다. 길게 느껴졌던 오솔길의 끝에 청련암이 있었다.
우연이었을까. 이 책을 다 읽고 나서 불현듯 생각이 났다.
깨달음으로 향하는 여정에서 우리는 길 잃은 신이다.
