History of Naming and Establishment of Gazipur District:

One time the ancient township 'Bhawal' Pargana is now known as Gazipur. There is a long historic background behind the name of Bhawal.

Various sources suggest that about two and a half thousand years ago, this region of Bengal was ruled by Mughal emperor Ashok. Because of this notion Sakhavar pillar situated in Joydebpur. Since ancient times, Dabak Dakurai Sakseshwar, a small township of this region, is ruled by Pala, Das, Chedi and Chandals. During these Muslim periods, these settlements became a huge pargana in the name of Bhawal (Bhawal).
From historical data it is known that in the ninth century AD, Raja Yashopal, Shishupal Pratap and Mahhenad Bhawal established small tiny Samanta Rajas at different places. According to conventional legends, these tiny feudal kingdoms were known as the Chedi kingdom.
In present-day Gazipur district, Sreepur, Kaliakoir (partial), Kapasia, Kaliganj and Tongi are parts of Gaffargaon and Trishal upazilas, parts of Savar upazila of Dhaka district, northern parts of Rupganj upazila of Narayanganj district and Harirampur union on the west of Tongi were present.

Various disagreements with the name of Bhawal are observed. According to Bhawal researcher Nurul Islam Bhawal Ratna, after the fall of Chandal kings, Bhawal Gazi came under the right. According to somebody, Bhawral or Bhabpal is named after Bhawal. During the war of Kurukshetra described in the Mahabharata, the existence of a kingdom called Bhabpal is known. Accordingly, the name 'Bhawal' is derived from 'Bhagal', because in the Mahabharata the name 'Bhalala' is also mentioned. There is a description of the name Brahmma-Purana Bhadra. According to the researcher Nurul Islam, it was first known from the law-e-akbari, that the name of this region is Bhawal.
Historians believe that in the twelfth century, the power of governance of the Sena dynasty was weakened by Bhawal populations. After the conquest of Muslims in the next phase, there is a rise of Muslim power in different regions of this region.

In this continuation, Bhawal (Bhawal) Ghazi became strong and one of the occupied territories of this region. Then, according to his own name, this township was named after Bhawal. His real name is Bhawal Gazi, from that language he is called Bhawal Gazi. During the Nawabi period, a police station was established in Dharashetam for revenue collection of Bhawal Parganas. Around this Dhirascharim, he grew up in a prosperous township, which has a place of broken buildings, dighis and roads
Some of these patterns are still left in villages such as Rahapara, Telinagar, Hyderabad, Rathkhola, Verarul and Meghdubi.
It is assumed that later Gazipur was also named after Bhawal Ghazi.
But there is another concept in the name of Gazipur that during the reign of Muhammad bin Tughlaq, Gazi of a Muslim wrestler settled in this region and he successfully ruled this region for a long time. In the name of this wrestler / Pahluan Ghazi, this region is named after Gazipur. Another commentary was that Isha Khan was the jagir of twenty-four parganas during this time of emperor Akbar. The name of one of the followers of Isha Khan was Fazl Ghazi. Who was the first 'chief' of the state of Bhawal. Gazipur has been named after the name of the name 'Gazi' associated with his name or name.
Before the name of Gazipur, it was named as Joydevpur and Bhawal or Bhawalgarh

After the partition of India in 1947, Awami League formed the political party. The Awami League leader Tajuddin Ahmed formulated an outline of political and administrative arrangements in the name of Bhawalgarh district. In the next, other political leaders took initiatives to transfer Dhaka Sadar North Mahakuma to Joydebpur under Bhawalgarh sub-division. But it was not possible to implement the initiative during the government of Pakistan. But since then the area has been known as Bhawalgarh district.
After the independence of Bangladesh, various political parties have raised the demand for elevation of Bhawalgarh as district.

In 1978, the chairman of Joydevpur Union Parishad AKM Mozammel Haque was the convener and initially the process of transferring the Dhaka Sadar North sub-division to Joydebpur was started. At that time, the government formed a committee to name the subdivision. On behalf of the committee, three names were referred to 'Bhawal', 'Bhawalgarh' and 'Gazipur' and were sent to the cabinet department of the government. Gazipur subdivision was formed in this way by the government's approval of the name of 'Gazipur' in recognition of the contribution of the hero Gazi of Bhawal.

In 1982 the Bangladesh government decided to upgrade the sub-divisions of the district to the district. But Gazipur subdivision is excluded from it. There was anger and reaction among the local people. At last, the 19-member Gazipur District Implementation Committee was constituted by appointing late Habibullah as convenor and member of AQ Mozammel Haque. When the members of the committee started extensive publicity, communication and movement to demand the formation of Gazipur, the government accepted Gazipur as district by accepting their demands.
On 1 March 1984, the then Chief Secretary of the government M Saiduzzaman inaugurated the new Gazipur district. On the volume side, Gazipur is ranked seventh among 17 districts of Dhaka division and 39 percent of Gazipur 39 districts in Bangladesh.
